Porfimer/Selected Photosensitizers Interactions

How the interaction occurs:

Porfimer and other medicines such as fluoroquinolones, phenothiazines, sulfonamides, thiazides, St. John's wort, griseofulvin, sulfonylureas, and tetracyclines increase your sensitivity to light.

What might happen:

Using porfimer with fluoroquinolones, phenothiazines, sulfonamides, thiazides, St. John's wort, griseofulvin, sulfonylureas, and tetracyclines can increase your skin's sensitivity to light. You may burn more quickly, your sunburn may be more severe than normal, and you may develop tingling in the skin.

What you should do about this interaction:

Let your healthcare professionals (e.g. doctor or pharmacist) know right away that you are taking these medicines together.Avoid fluoroquinolones, phenothiazines, sulfonamides, thiazides, St. John's wort, griseofulvin, sulfonylureas, and tetracyclines for at least 30 days after receiving porfimer. You may continue to have a higher sensitivity to light for 90 days or longer if you have liver disease or severe kidney disease.Avoid direct sunlight and bright indoor light. Wear protective clothing and dark sunglasses when outdoors.Your healthcare professionals may already be aware of this interaction and may be monitoring you for it. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with them first.
