If you are an adult over 60
- management or monitoring precaution: Renal-Adjust dose according to renal function. Neuro/Psych-Higher risk of tardive dyskinesia in the elderly. May cause sedation, worsen cognitive impairment and increase fall risk. Increased risk of death in senile dementia. Cardiovascular-May cause orthostatic hypotension. Elderly may be more predisposed to drug induced QT prolongation. Gastrointestinal-May cause or worsen pre-existing constipation. Genitourinary-Urinary retention risk.
Giving Haloperidol to a child under 12
- Severe Precaution: Risks of somnolence, weight gain, glucose, lipid abnormalities. Unknown long term effects on growth and development. Safety and efficacy not established in children age < 12 years.
- Severe Precaution: Monitor weight and for glucose, lipid abnormalities. Risks include somnolence, akathisia, tremor, dystonia, anxiety, and tachycardia. Unknown long-term effects on growth and development.
