What is AzaSite used for?
AzaSite (azithromycin) is used for certain eye infections called bacterial conjunctivitis, which is a form of pink eye. Symptoms of this infection include redness, irritation, swelling, and runny eyes. It can be easily spread to both eyes and to other people.
AzaSite may also be used for other conditions as determined by your healthcare provider.
How does AzaSite work (mechanism of action)?
AzaSite stops certain types of bacteria from making proteins they need to grow and multiply.
How is Azasite supplied (dosage forms)?
Azasite is supplied in the following dosage forms that are used in the eye.
- 1% eye drops
How should I store AzaSite?
Before opening, store AzaSite in a refrigerator between 36 F and 46 F (2 C to 8 C). After opening, store it at room temperature or in the refrigerator between 36 F and 77 F (2 C to 25 C). Do not keep AzaSite for more than 14 days after opening. Throw away the bottle after 14 days.
Side Effects
What are the most common side effects of AzaSite?
The most common side effects of AzaSite are listed below. Tell your healthcare provider if you have any of these side effects that bother you.
- Eye discomfort including burning, stinging, irritation, dry eye, pain, itching, runny eyes, or feeling like something is in your eye
- Blurry vision
- Change in taste
- Stuffy nose and sinus infection

What are the serious side effects of AzaSite?
While less common, the most serious side effects of AzaSite are described below, along with what to do if they happen.
Severe Allergic Reactions. AzaSite can cause allergic reactions, which can be serious. Stop using AzaSite and get help right away if you have any of the following symptoms of a serious allergic reaction.
- Breathing problems or wheezing
- Racing heart
- Fever or general ill feeling
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue, or throat
- Trouble swallowing or throat tightness
- Itching, skin rash, or pale red bumps on the skin called hives
- Nausea or vomiting
- Dizziness, feeling lightheaded, or fainting
- Stomach cramps
- Joint pain
Severe Skin Reactions. AzaSite can cause severe skin reactions called Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN) that can lead to death if not treated. If you develop a rash, stop AzaSite and call your healthcare provider right away. Get emergency help right away if you have any of the following symptoms of SJS or TEN.
- Painful red or purple skin that looks burned and peels off
- Flat red rash or blisters on your skin, mouth, nose, and genitals
- Red, painful, watery eyes
Increased risk of other infections. Using AzaSite for a long time may cause other bacteria or fungus to grow leading to new infections. Tell your healthcare provider right away if your symptoms do not get better.
Warnings & Precautions
Who should not use AzaSite?
Allergies to Ingredients. People who are allergic to any of the following should not use AzaSite.
- AzaSite
- azithromycin
- azithromycin monohydrate
- Any of the ingredients in the specific product dispensed

What should I know about AzaSite before using it?
Do not use AzaSite unless it has been prescribed to you by a healthcare provider. Use it as prescribed. Do not skip drops or stop AzaSite early, even if your symptoms get better or go away. This will reduce the risk that future infections are not resistant to AzaSite or other similar medicines.
Do not share AzaSite with other people, even if they have the same condition as you. It may harm them.
Wash your hands each time you use AzaSite. Do not let the tip of the bottle touch your eye, fingers, or other objects.
Before opening the bottle, turn it upside down and give it a strong shake. Keep the bottle upside down while you take off the cap. Tilt your head back and gently squeeze the bottle to put the drop into the affected eye(s). If a drop misses your eye, try again.
Keep AzaSite out of the reach of children.
Do not wear contact lenses if you have signs or symptoms of an eye infection and until you finish your full treatment with this medicine.
What should I tell my healthcare provider before using AzaSite?
Tell your healthcare provider about all your health conditions and any prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, vitamins/minerals, herbal products, and other supplements you are using. This will help them determine if AzaSite is right for you.
In particular, make sure that you discuss any of the following.
Pregnancy. It is not known if or how AzaSite could affect pregnancy or harm an unborn baby. Tell your healthcare provider if you are or plan to become pregnant. Your healthcare provider will advise you if you should use AzaSite while you are pregnant or trying to get pregnant.
Breastfeeding. It is not known if AzaSite passes into breast milk. Tell your healthcare provider if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. Your healthcare provider will advise you if you should use AzaSite while breastfeeding.

Overdose/Missed Dose
What should I do if I accidentally use too much AzaSite?
If you or someone else has used too much AzaSite, get medical help right away, call 911, or call a Poison Control center at 800-222-1222.
What should I do if I miss a dose of AzaSite?
If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and only use the next dose. Do not use double or extra doses.
