Sugammadex/Hormonal Contraceptives Interactions

How the interaction occurs:

Sugammadex may make your hormonal contraceptive less effective.

What might happen:

The blood levels of your contraceptive may decrease, causing breakthrough bleeding, spotting, or pregnancy.

What you should do about this interaction:

Sugammadex is only used during surgical procedures or in a hospital. If you are to have either inpatient or outpatient surgery, or are to be admitted to the hospital, make sure that all the healthcare professionals are aware of all the different medicines that you are taking. This includes prescription and nonprescription medicines, herbal medicines, and nutraceuticals.If you are taking an oral hormonal contraceptive product, on the day you receive sugammadex you should follow the instructions in the patient leaflet for your hormonal conceptive on what to do if you miss a dose, even if you take your normal dose that day.If you are using a non-oral hormonal contraceptive (e.g. injection, patch, ring), you should use a non-hormonal backup method of birth-control for seven days after you receive sugammadex. Refer to the leaflet for your hormonal contraceptive for more information.Your healthcare professionals may already be aware of this interaction and may be monitoring you for it. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any medicine before checking with them first.
