Uses

What is Galafold used for?

Galafold (migalastat) is commonly used for a rare inherited condition called Fabry disease.

Galafold may also be used for other conditions as determined by your healthcare provider.

How does Galafold work (mechanism of action)?

A specific enzyme, called alpha-galactosidase A, does not work correctly in people with Fabry disease. Over time, this causes a certain type of fatty substance to build up in the body, which can cause serious health issues.

In some types of Fabry disease, the enzyme does not work at all. In other types, the enzyme is unstable and does not work as well as it should. Galafold is used in people with the unstable form of the enzyme. It binds to the enzyme, keeping it stable so that it can work correctly. This allows the enzyme to stop the fatty substance from building up in the body.
