What should I Know Regarding Pregnancy, Nursing and Administering Sufentanil Citrate Sublingual to Children or the Elderly?

If you are pregnant

  • Not Recommended:

    • If you are nursing

  • Precaution: INSUFF DATA AVAIL; MOLECULAR WT LOW ENOUGH FOR POSSIBLE BREASTMILK EXCRETION.

    • If you are an adult over 60

  • management or monitoring precaution: Pulmonary-DO NOT USE in opioid intolerance. Life threatening respiratory depression risk due to altered pharmacokinetics (poor fat stores, muscle wasting, or altered clearance). Monitor closely at initiation and dose titration. Consider naloxone Rx. Neuro/Psych-Risk for confusion, delirium and falls. Avoid treatment with 3 or more CNS active agents. Gastrointestinal-Increased rate of constipation in the elderly. Cardiovascular-Vasodilation may predispose to orthostatic hypotension.

    • Pediatric use

  • Severe Precaution: Safety and efficacy not established in pediatric patients; sublingual dosage form is not recommended for younger children. With any opioid, access to naloxone for emergency reversal can mitigate risk from accidental ingestion/overdose.
