Used topical diphenhydramine to alleviate maddening itching from mosquito bites and wasp stings. Relief is immediate but short-term. In presence of sunlight (like on a hike) skin becomes itchy very fast and gel must be reapplied much too frequently. In contrast, calamine lotion stopped production of histamines in the skin and lasted much longer.
