I've been using this drug for about 20 years and it has been extemely effective in controlling my Crohn's disease. I've had no side effects and no reoccurances since I been on this drug. I have my blood checked every 3 months, no problems.

It made me even sicker and getting off of it after months of nights being dizzy to the point of purging was a huge relief.

I am the daughter of the patient who had a kidney transplantation and had used this medicine. My experience: I can strongly say that the medicine is very powerful and will damage other vital organs of the body.My mother almost became mad by using this medicine and I advice, the manufacturers to consider adding this point to the side effect leaf let:- people who take this medicine should take good food intake and sleep well.As you are taking this type of medicine it is important to maintain good health and keep away from infected people.Read More Read Less

My son took this drug for ulcerative colitis. If you take this drug, make sure you have a doctor who will follow you closely. He obviously did not. Immediately developed severe allergy symptoms, vomiting, diarrhea, joint pain, could not walk. Called daily and told to continue drug. After three weeks he couldn't take any more. A week later was hospitalized with a brain abscess. Had two open brain surgeries. Spent three months in hospital, two of those at Ohio State Med Center. While there had a stroke and another open brain surgery. He was 32 years old. Now at home with us. At 35 he will never be able to live alone again. No memory. This drug and the neglect of his doctor almost cost him his life. Read More Read Less

My 86 year old mother-in-law developed severe bullous pemphrigoid and Imuran (generic azathioprine) in combination with slowly decreasing amounts of prednisone has completely cleared it. During hospitalization and rehab for a broken hip, they deleted the azathioprine, and the condition returned. Restoring azathioprine cleared it up again. No side effects noted.

I have never been so sick in my life. Violent diahrrea and vomiting simultaneously. I had about 5 episodes in a month. My internal medicine doctor thought it might be my gall bladder. He did not know that my gastro doc had prescribe Imuran for my ulcerative colitis. In fact, I only took Imuran a few times. When I got sick, I stopped taking the Imuran because I did not want to take a new medicine while I was sick with something else. Test confirmed that I had gall stones and that my gall bladder was not functioning correctly. A few days before I was scheduled to have my gall bladder out, I went to the emergency room because I had been having diahrrea and vomiting for 12 hours. When I came home 5 hours later after having had an IV for fluid replacement and to calm my system, I still had a BM (all water by now) before I went to sleep. Five weeks after I had my gall bladder out, I had another episode of vomiting/diahrrea. Well, guess what?? I had started to take Imuran again for my ulcerative colitis. I took it at lunch at work for the first time in a month, and by 4:30 pm. I had to run out the door vomiting. Got home just in time to avoid messing my pants. My gastroenterolgist had given me the imuran for my ulcerative colitis. I only took the pills several times in the month that I had the episodes, and they did not happen in the day after I took the imuran. My internal medicine doc said that imuran stays in your system for a long time. He said my gall bladder did not function correctly and needed coming out, but that my taking the imuran had been what was causing my vomiting and diahrrea problems. Read More Read Less

I take 150 mg of Imuran now. I have Lupus with hurtful joint swelings. I was taking Plaquenil for the Lupus which was great for five years until I was hospitalized with TTP, where my white platelets decreased dangerously. Possible cause the plaquenil. Imuran was introduced to me. I started with 50mg and it took three months at a dosage of 150 mg not to have any more joint swellings. I only have to use Imuran. I don't have to use prednisone anymore. My hair is thinning and breaking. I have blood work up every month. I'm concerned about the side effects of Imuran. Overall though I am blessed.Read More Read Less

I started Imuran two months ago and within first two weeks developed cellulitis of right jaw. Started experiencing nausea, severe abdominal pain and swelling. Consulted with Rheumatologist and was given option to discontinue med, which I did. I have been sicker than sick for 1 week since then, severe muscle and joint pain, nausea, fatigue. Will not take this med again!

I've experience breast cancer in 2003 and again in 2013. I also have had three skin carcinoma's with grafting 4 different times. I had the genetic testing done but I do not have the mutated genes. My doctors feel Imuran could contributed to my cancer. More research needs to be done on the cause of Crohn's and other diseases so that medication that causes additional issues can be avoided.
