I have been struggling with migraines that only started around the time I turned 40 (so for a few years now.) One every 3 weeks or so but they were getting bad and nothing really was helping. I was resistant to medications because I was fearful of long term side effects and just the idea of taking strong medications was foreign to me. Finally my doctor convinced me to try Trokendi XR 50 mg. I've b...

I found out from my doctor that there is another extended release medication on the market called Qudexy. He told me that it had clinical data showing a reduction in side effects, especially for the brain fog that I had. Trokendi doesn't have a clinical trial. It is newer than the Trokendi, but worth asking your doctor about!

This Trokendi is no better than the generic. It left a weird taste in my mouth and I am so tired all the time.

Before you make your decision on using a medication like Trokendi XR, be cautious reading anonymous user reviews. Some companies will write negative reviews about a product to promote their own like Qudexy just did below. The patient is the ultimate person that matters, not some rep trying to promote their product on a anonymous board. That being said, the individuals who truly suffer from these conditions I wish you all well.

I have had migraines since i was 17. I have tried 3 different preventive meds. My dr. wanted me to try Trokendi. So i started about a month ago. It has worked well to prevent the migraines (i was getting 5 a week), but the side effect aren't great. Reading the side effects list and other reviews i see thati am not going crazy! Tingling in feet, hands, dizzy, fuzzy mind, hard to concentrate, irritable. what a tradeoff.... I will try for a period of time but not forever. Do the side effects go away?Read More Read Less

Ten times better than topiramate IR. I have chronic daily l headache with breakthrough migraine. I started taking topiramate (topamax) in October of 2013 and shortly after I got my dose up to 200mg daily I had to go back to the doctor and ask to get off it. I was waking up multiple times per week with pins and needles in my legs and face, I was aggressive, emotional, and couldn't remember words or tasks. She had me reduce the dose but the migraines got worse again, so then she switched me to Trokendi 200mg. It's amazing. I've been on it over a year, and only wake up from the parathesia once every few months. I'm a little forgetful, but not enough that other people notice, and I manage well enough to attend school full time and maintain > 3.6 GPA and work 30-50 hours a week, and do an internship. I was way too absent-minded on IR topiramate to do that, and despite frequent breakthrough migraines, trokendi (and my other drugs) reduce my baseline daily HA a lot, from an average of 4 to 2, with about 6 breakthrough migraines usually around 5-6. Before, I was frequently hitting 7s and sometimes 8s. One odd thing I noticed, that started on topiramate and hasn't gone away with the switch is my spelling is pretty bad now. It is usually forgetting or adding letters, but it can be a challenge trying to read my notes. My brain seems a little jumbled. Read More Read Less

Tried generic topiramate 6 months, then brand name Topamax 18 months, Trokendi XR 18 months for migraine prevention.100/mg day. The side effects were significantly less with XR, but eventually grew worse over time. Almost 3 years taking some version of topiramate and I'm done. Thinning hair, extreme fatigue, insomnia, anxiety and horrible irritability with mood swings worst of the side effects, all have gotten to an extreme. Although this was amazing for headaches can't bear the side effects any longer. Off for about 6 weeks now, feeling so much better, minus the almost nonstop headaches and migraines that have returned...Read More Read Less

I've only been on Trokendi for a little over 2 weeks, so admittedly it's early days, but the side effects are horrific so far. I spent over three years on regular Topamax, so it's not like I was unprepared, but my neuro *swore* this med was free of the same nasty side effects. Well, yes and no. Have same altered taste, mental confusion, slowed reflexes, and insomnia as before, but now I have exciting new aggravated asthma, inexplicable anger/hostility, general anxiety, cystitis, musculoskeletal aches, and a whacking great respiratory infection to boot. Told myself I'd stick it out for two months, but not sure if I'll make it the whole time. The altered mood and sense of hopelessness is really getting to me. Read More Read Less

I only took this $330 (with insurance) medication for 2 days, and I couldn't concentrate worth nothing. It did nothing for migraines either. I am taking college classes that I can't afford to miss and have missed more by taking this medicine than not taking it. I didn't think that taking it for such a short time could do this to me, but OMG! If you want to know what a zombie feels like. I am also taking phentermine to try to lose weight. (Yes, I realize I am obese! It is an epidemic) I tried to do a simple math problem for my accounting class last night and was in tears. All I could do was stare at my computer and cry. This is not ok. This is not normal for me either. I am a normally very active person, (who has been forced to sit for long periods to learn and do homework). Re-formulated and more costly to still make me feel like a zombie. I don't think so.Read More Read Less

I've suffered from migraines for ~25 years and have tried nearly every preventative on the market. Trokendi XR has helped reduce my migraines from 2/3 of the days in a month to about 1/3, which is great. The side effects, however, are similar to Topiramate and are rough - exhaustion, difficulty with word recall, awful memory, other cognitive issues, bleeding problems, fuzzy vision, twitching eyes and face, pins & needles in feet, GI distress, etc. Fewer headaches are worth it though, I think...Read More Read Less

I take this medicine to help with headache from a brain disorder called chairi malformation. I can't really say how it's going to work after only taking it 4 days because I still have the headache, but I just wanted to know if anyone else was taking it for Chairi malformation?

I've just been on the Trokendi for a week so I guess I shouldn't even rate it yet. No headaches, YAY, but I am so dizzy. Someone tell me this will go away. Lots better than Topomax though!

I have diabetic pain in my feet, without having diabetes plus leg cramps and onset myopathy in both legs just below my knees. So far only I've been on this just over a week and I feel I'm 70% out of the pain. I'm a big soda drinker, but now they taste flat. Which is a big letdown, but the relief outweigh my missing colas. Read on comments that others have been helped with headaches, which might prove to be a pulse for me and my migraines.

I take Trokendi because I have a migraine variant which gives me vertigo, which makes me fall over, double vision, and flying lights in addition to the migraine, aura an vomiting. I tried various other medications (Cyproheptadine, Amitriptyline, and they didn't work for the vertigo. I tried Topamax as others have and the main problem was memory. I couldn't pull words out hardly at all. I was a little off balance (falling over a bit) sometimes as well. With Trokendi, the two weeks I took the same dose (100mg) and I was wiped out tired. But after that the fatigue almost went away and I still have problems with memory but not nearly as bad as Topamax. I can take 75mg instead but they don't make a 75mg pill so I have to buy 3 packs of 25 mg. I use the discount card as well. This year it seems the insurance paid for it (I think) and I have a PPO. So I hope next year they will too. As for lessening the migraines it doesn't change the frequency of those but it has lowered the intensity. I still take Imitrex and/or tylenol when I get a migraine. I also have taken Klonopin for 20 years for the vomiting and that is gone and 10mg of Amitriptyline. So I recommend this drug for anyone that doesn't have the particular glaucoma problem. Also, I am having some balance issues and low blood pressure and low glucose. I don't know if that is my vegan diet or if it is the drug. But my bp is 85/55 (really low) and Blood sugar about 70 non fasting. To whom ever takes this drug be sure to stay cool and drink 8 glasses of water. You can get over heated. I have but had no serious problems from it. After being on the drug for 2 years I still get tingling in my feet off and on. take care. Read More Read Less

This med has changed my life!!! I use to take topamax 2x a day (aka) dopamax. I still experienced multiple migraines a month cause i would forget to take my meds. I use to have trouble staying alert and remembering words. I was given samples of trokendi XR and I am so thankful I was. I don't feel those nasty side effects anymore and I function much better. I HAVENT had any migraines since switching. This med has a coupon and I pay $10.00 a month!!! I highly recommend trying it!!! THANKS

I was given this med (trokendi) to get me off topamax. I was able to reduce my usage from 75 mg to 25 mg however I'm not able to get off the medication completely. I felt nauseous, had a underlying headache (no migraine) and I had to go back on after 2 weeks. Has anyone else tried to ween off this medication?

I was resistant to medications because I was fearful of long term side effects and just the idea of taking strong medications was foreign to me. Finally my doctor convinced me to try Trokendi XR 50 mg. I've been on it about a month and for the first week, the side effects were quite noticeable. Confusion, disorientation in the morning, wobbly walking, muffled thinking etc. But I promised I'd go a whole month and I am SO thankful I have. I've had no migraines. Twice I forgot to take the medicine (I take it at night) and the following morning I felt a bit of a headache coming on. I can see that it is meaningful to me. Some foods taste weird… anything carbonated is just strange tasting and that's okay, I didn't need it anyway. Some foods taste a little tinny and my throat is a bit dry sometimes, but other than that, I have none of the early side effects anymore. I am grateful to see that other people are also using this for migraine prevention as I was initially under the impression that this purpose was an off-label use. Clearly they are onto something here. I've thrown away my completely useless Imitrex and I'm cautiously optimistic about my migraines now. Read More Read Less

I have fewer full blown migraines-I have chronic daily migraines, but my asthma has gotten so bad that I can barely walk. The list of side effects is breathing difficulty. I can't find a drug that doesn't give me horrible side effects. I've weaned off and my migraines are back full force. I guess I can either breathe or control the asthma but not both? Even more asthma meds isn't helping.

I suffer from Seizures AND Severe Migraines and take 300 MG per day. I would take 150 AM and 150 PM of Topirimate. I switched to Trokendi XR from Topomax/Topirimate because of the ease of use (missing doses with Topirimate and the migraines that would ensue) and the supposed Less side effects that Topirimate had. Topirimate side effects were: Severe fatigue, memory loss or fog, taste effected/change (sodas especially-ew gross), dizziness, concentration problems, speech problems, (like you're searching for a word and it's on the tip or your tongue but can't think of it/tongue twisted alll the time), trouble walking/balance, drowsiness. Boy, the first week was pure hell. I had to take 3 days off work. Had severe migraines and nausea, weight loss. Took 3 weeks for it to work it's way to normal. Then the shocker. Topirimate cost me $5 per month. Because I have to take 2 different doses of Trokendi (a 200 mg and a 100 mg) it will cost me with my insurance around $380 per month for Trokendi. WTH. I got a discount card only good for a little while. After that my mail order will cost me $210 every 3 months. I have waited 3 months doing a cost/benefit analysis on it to see if the benefits outway the cost. Did the negative side effects of Topirimate go away???THE ORIGINAL SIDE EFFECTS HAVE NOT CHANGED. The side effects I had from Topirimate and the side effects from Trokendi are the same. No difference. I have had a FEW fewer migraines. That's it. Maybe 1 a month less. i will be switching back to Topirimate. Read More Read Less

I felt completely drunk for days on only 50 mg of this drug, provided I'm about 105 lbs. 48 kg. I was so out of it I couldn't hold a conversation. My body lost all coordination so dancing tango and practicing yoga were completely out of the question. My doctor promptly removed me from the drug upon my report.
