I have been struggling with migraines that only started around the time I turned 40 (so for a few years now.) One every 3 weeks or so but they were getting bad and nothing really was helping. I was resistant to medications because I was fearful of long term side effects and just the idea of taking strong medications was foreign to me. Finally my doctor convinced me to try Trokendi XR 50 mg. I've b...

I found out from my doctor that there is another extended release medication on the market called Qudexy. He told me that it had clinical data showing a reduction in side effects, especially for the brain fog that I had. Trokendi doesn't have a clinical trial. It is newer than the Trokendi, but worth asking your doctor about!

I LOVE Trokendi XR! After getting terrible migraines for a year that made me sick to the point where I was vomiting, had the runs, had to call off work, and had to miss classes, I decided that taking over-the-counter pain killers wasn't enough. I was tired of feeling absolutely miserable. I finally talked to my family doctor, who started me on the 25mg, then the 50mg, then the 100mg, which is what I'm currently on. These were all sample packs, btw. When she finally called in my prescription, my insurance company didn't want to cover it. So I was prescribed Topamax (aka Dopamax) instead, and OMG...never again will I take that, nor do I recommend it!!! I could barely eat even though I knew I needed food in my system, I had to force myself to eat. And I couldn't sleep. I know migraines are miserable, but I felt miserable 24/7 when I was on this medication! Needless to say, this is exactly why I am back on Trokendi, and luckily I was able to get a temporary discount card. I will pay extra for this medication; it is definitely worth it, and it literally has not given me any nasty side effects!! It feels GREAT to eat again!!! Read More Read Less

It works as well as Topamax for me and it doesn't have the side effect of Topamax--bone marrow suppression--I have never before seen a drug that has been reformulated to get rid of a really bad side effect--I was amazed! topamax worked better for me with fewere side effect except for the one bad one that all the other drugs put together--so I am looking forward to gatting off some of the tohers.

For those of you like me who can't take Topamax because of the really nasty side effect of bone marrow suppression, Trokendi XR may be the answer! Finally someone listened and got rid of a nasty side effect. Only been on it a short while, but so far so good.

I have only been on this medication for 5 days so far, but I have Chronic Migraine, and so far, I have only had one day where I felt a migraine coming on, I used my abortives and boom it was gone. This is not typical for me, as I usually walk around with a background headache all the time. My first 5 day impression is good. No side effects so far especially compared to regular Topamax which was hard on me cognitively. I will report back if anything changes but I am super excited about this med so far! This chronic Migrainuers fingers are crossed it continues to work!Read More Read Less

After being on Keppra for 18 months and it not working (still having a simple partial seizure about once per month) the neurologist slowly transitioned me to Trokendi XR oral. The second day I was off Keppra and on Trokendi XR I felt terrible. I was disoriented, had cold sweats, was nauseous, had numerous simple partial seizures and was extremely tired. At one point I laid down and felt so miserable that I couldn't get up. I saw neurologist the next day, stopped taking Trokendi XR and went back to Keppra. Needless to say I had a terrible experience with Trokendi XR.Read More Read Less

I suffer from Migraines; Hemiplegic. I had to come back and update my review of this drug. When I was seen by my physician, none of the side affects I complained of were still evident! I have to admit Trokendi XR has been a "game changer" for me! I never, ever thought I could live with only one migraine a month. Next month I am hopeful for ZERO!!! Plus, I no longer function like a zombie. My doctor suggested the dry eyes were due to allergies...howerver, I have not had a problem since I have been on the new dosage of Trokendi XR. I am so thankful! Read More Read Less

I am so greatful to have been given the samples of Trokendi XR from my physician. I had been taking topamax since 2006, 25mg BID- I would frequently miss my pm dose and experience breakthrough migraines a few times a month. I never complained to my physician bc I didn't know there was any other alternative and I was more controlled than I was without medication. I now take 50mg of trokendi XR in the morning and leave the house for yoga. No more tingling or dizziness and I have not had a migraine since switching. Ask your doctor about Trokendi XR. I have NJ Medicaid and pay the same as I did for generic topamax!Read More Read Less

I suffer from Migraines; Hemiplegic. I started Trokendi XR 200mg + 25mg Topamax tompiramate) after taking 225mg Tomipiramate a day for 8 mths. I switched at the suggestion of my Dr. to see if Trokendi would lessen the dopey effects. The drug caused me to experience some side affects. Week 1; weight gain, fluid retention, blood pressure increase. Week 2; dry eyes, pressure behind the eyes, fatique, joint pain, leg pain, muscle weakness. Week 3; Migraine break thru - had a fall. I'm going back to Tomamax for now. Ease of use is wonderful. It DID get rid of the Dopey effect! The idea of an extended release Topamax is great, but the side affects chased me away. Perhaps we can tweaked it later. My Migraines are special. Read More Read Less

I started taking Trokendi 2 months ago after trying most migraine preventives including topamax generic and brand. I am very pleased with Trokendi and have been able to stay migraine free with a dose of only 25mg per day which is the starting dose. I tried to taper up once upon urging of my physician but the side effects kicked in and I went back to the tiny dose which is effective for me for keeping the 3x a week migraines at bay. Even at the small dose, the first few weeks were an adjustment but got through them. I am very pleased.Read More Read Less

I imagine this is what it might feel like to perform brain surgery after not sleeping for 72 hours. I can't make high level decisions, like whether or not to go to the restroom. I'm so lightheaded I have a constant urge to barf. Ugh. But no migraines.

I have been taking Trokendi XR 200mg for 4 months in combination with Botox. After suffering with migraines and not being able to function at all for years, I am truly grateful. I still get migraines but not as frequently. There are side effects that I wish would have dissipated by now. The most awful one is the lack of sexual drive (I am a female). The other side effects I have are memory loss and sometimes I have a hard time finding words when I am speaking. One other side effect that I find to be positive is carbonated beverages taste awful so diet coke has been completed eliminated from my house! That being said, I will take these side effects, over the migraines I previously suffered from practically every single day that were completely debiltating!Read More Read Less

I have been on this medication for a month. For 2 months I woke up every, single morning with a terrible migraine. Since taking this med, I have had 3 headaches that were quickly taken away with OTC meds. This med has truly been my lifesaver!!! The only 2 side affects I had was a bad taste in my mouth and extreme dizziness that went away after the first week or two of use. I only take this at bedtime because it does make me sleepy. I have tried so many other medications and this has truly been the BEST for me. Everyone has noticed a difference in how "happy" I seem to be. After suffering from migraines since the age of 12, this medication has been such a blessing to me! I feel like I have my life back! I recommend that you take this at bedtime ONLY and that you stick it out as the side affects will more than likely go away after a week or two with regular use. If you suffer migraines as bad as I do, you are willing to tough out those side affects until this med gets into your system and does what it's suppose to do. I should also note that after taking my first dose, I woke up the next morning "headache free", so it does not take days to start working....it works immediately! Good luck to you! =) Read More Read Less

I have taken this drug for 3 months now and have found it to be the most effective daily preventative prescription available. Before taking Trokendi XR 200MG I took Topromate 50MG 4x daily. It's such a relief to only take one pill a day. I do have a strange side effect that effects my taste of carbonate beverages. Everything tastes flat. That took a long time to adjust to but it actual turned out to be a good thing to help me to drink more water and stop drinking soda. I also suffered from kidney stones before this medication but have not had any increased issues since starting it. It does cause that sort of migraine medicine "fog" for a few hours but it beats being layed up in bed in the fetal position for two days so I'm ok with that. All in all it is a great effective medicine for true migrane sufferers.Read More Read Less

It is good that it has helped remove the main problem I am taking it for which is vertigo caused by migraine. However, the medication causes memory problems and concentration problems for me. Also, fatigue all day. The fatigue is worse than regular Topamax at the same dose (100mg). The memory problems are better than the Topamax at a lesser dose (75mg). I have to decide whether I can tolerate the fatigue to get to get a little bit of better memory.

I have tried so many med.s but this is the only one that works for me. I feel like my old self. The only bad part is I can't keep my weight up! Things taste bad, but I think clear now so it's a even trade I guess.
