I lost much of my sense of taste during the prolonged process of wearing an injection pump feeding a pik line 24/7 for 5 weeks. I developed a troubling itching condition on my legs, arms, back and a few smaller areas. The skin eventually flaked off when the treatment stopped. It took about one month to recover from the symptoms after treatment stopped. The infection invaded my left shoulder whi...

After shattering my pelvic bone, and after 2 major surgeries, I was put on Nafcillin IV via a Picc IV line for 6 weeks (Every 4 hours continuous IV administration). The Picc IV line itself is difficult to maintain (i.e. cleaning, flushing, bag changes, etc). I have had severe nausea, specifically during the infusion periods every 4 hours. I am on 8mg Zofran for this, which helps, but doesn't remove entirely. I have also had diarrhea/loose stools since hospitalization and beginning this medication via IV. I was told not to use any Imodium/anti-diarrheal medications, so I have refrained from their use. The medication also causes a lot of "growling" from my intestines/bowels. I have had noticeable muscle weakness that has accompanied the nausea as well. Since the Picc IV is infusing my Nafcillin treatment, I have no noticeable pain at the infusion site, which is great. It was painful when I was receiving this drug via a peripheral IV in the hospital, however. I was told that this drug also causes renal and liver function to decline, which I have noticed from my most recent labs (i.e. Potassium and Hepatic Function Labs), so it's important to keep in close touch with your care team/doctors while on this medication.Read More Read Less

On a PICC line for 6 weeks to treat a post op staph infection. One of the symptoms not listed is my hair is falling out. I stopped treatment 6 weeks ago and the hair is still coming out. While this isn't a severe reaction or life threatening, and I had to take the medication, it's a symptom that should be tracked to avoid patients thinking something else might be wrong.

I was put on a continuous drip of nafcillin a little over a week ago. Spent the first week in the hospital and have another two weeks at least at home. I developed a line infection that spread to my blood, we've dealt with this before, but this med has taken it's toll on me. I am so tired all the time, joint pain, what little I could take in orally is down to nothing. We might have to go to the ER to get everything checked because I have gone into kidney failure on IV antibiotics in the past. I think the drug is necessary, but I can't lie and say that it is very fun to be on. Read More Read Less

I have been on infusion Nafcillin treatment for 5 weeks. The 4th week my taste started diminishing. Currently everthing I eat taste terrible especially after chewing for a few seconds. I've had diarrhea the entire 5 weeks. Taking Imodium 4 times a day just slows down occurances.

The drug has worked well for me. I had an infection on my clavicle and ribs 1 and 2. the infection was extremely painful and I spent a week in the hospital after having 2 growths of infection removed from my chest wall. i have been home now doing a 6 week 24 hr i.v. pump. Its very uncomfortable for sure. A lot of joint pain mostly. But the medication is doing its job. I was loaded with the infection and because Im in good shape for 50 i am able to put up with the joint pain. But that was about the only side effect other than urinating a lt.Read More Read Less

As a result of back surgery due to Adult Scoliosis and Severe Lumbar Stenosis, I picked up a Staph infection forcing the removal of the rods, cage, pins and screws placed during the surgery in order to fight the infection. Because of a worry over my back sagging the hardware was put back before the infection was removed. Since then I have been on Nafcillin Sodium IV every 4 hours for the past 4 weeks. My Infectious Disease Physician recently told me the infection has not decreased enough to discontinue Nafcillin treatment and that I would need to continue treatment for the next 6 weeks. :-(( I have not experienced any of the published drug side effects, however the 4 hour treatments are getting old, causing me to wonder about the effectiveness of Nafcillin on my Staph infection. I was told the Staph adheres to the hardware and that it is extremely difficult to destroy because of all the metal in my back. I know that Staph infections are quite serious, however I wonder if Nafcillin is up to the task of destroying my infection. I recommend your infectious disease doctor examine all options before choosing Nafcillin as the treatment choice.Read More Read Less

This medication caused seizure like and uncontrollable movements, hallucinations and agitation in a 53 year old male quadreplegic being treated for a skin infection caused by a simple blood draw! The infection was responding Very well to this antibiotic but the side effects where unexceptable! To stop the 2 hrs of seizure like uncont. movements a nuerologist had to tell the Dr. to use a antiseizure drug which worked and then totally knocked him out for 4 solid hours at which time he woke VERY confused. The dose was 500mg and then was cut down, the hallucinations continued along with the confusion so it was finally discontinued!! Do Drs. ever take into account the risks. I had to tell her that We thought it was a reaction to the drug and on day 2 she finally said she thought we MIGHT be right...Read More Read Less

I developed a troubling itching condition on my legs, arms, back and a few smaller areas. The skin eventually flaked off when the treatment stopped. It took about one month to recover from the symptoms after treatment stopped. The infection invaded my left shoulder which required immediate surgury to remove a large amount of it. It was also found later that it had infected my very low spinal vertabre. Thanks to good doctoring and Nafcillin treatment, no invasive surgery was required in the spine area.Read More Read Less

I am on this drug 24 hours a day for 6 weeks due to a mysterious Staph infection in my hip. My doctors have no idea how I got this bacteria. This drug has litterally saved my life. I have a pick line in my left arm and a pump that goes everywhere I do!

It did it's job & removed the infection. However, a side effect has been that I lost my sense of taste & somewhat my sense of smell. I have been off the medicine for 2 weeks without any improvement. My doctor told me that my taste may or may not return & if it does it could take several months. Due to this side effect most foods taste like cardboard, sawdust, no flavor at all. I am losing too much weight & I'm concerned about my lack of nutrition as I am diabetic. Not my doctor or anywhere on the web is there an answer for a cure. Read More Read Less
