I was told that i was chronically constipated by an internist an that i would always have to take a laxative to help this condition. But after being prescribed docusate sodium to avoid straining after a hysterectomy, I have found my long term answer. No diarrhea, cramping or negative side effects at all. It just works!

After loose stool for two weeks, with no cramping or pain,My MD said that I was constipated, and prescribed ducosate. After one week he doubled the dose and said I could take an over the counter laxative which caused diarrhea. I stopped that but now, after five weeks my symptoms are exactly what they were originally.

I am 88 years old and not very active. I take one capsule each night and it works fine for me. Otherwise I may end up with an impaction.

I have ongoing constipation because of narcotics usage (cancer pain). This works exactly as expected. Coupled with Senna-S (a pusher) it gives perfect relief.

i have taken this for many years. It was fine until the past two years in which i have had INCREASING weight loss, fatigue, stroke and heart symptoms, and weakness to the point i could no longer go to church, grocery shopping or function even close to normal. Suddenly i went from one doctor to 5 and 2 prescription drugs to 6 and had every test of every organ - MRIs, Scans, Heart Cath, endoscope, etc., i decided to test my OTC drugs by stopping one at a time for a week at a time to see if it made a difference. Docusate Sodium was 2nd. Within 3 days i was a new person and by the weekend i was able to go to church, grocery shop using the electric cart sit at the computer for more than 15 minutes and read a book with understanding. With an exercise program, i am getting lost strength back. i also, no long have a constipation problem. The medicine worked well for me for many years. i just stayed on it too long.Read More Read Less

The pill I am taking is twice a day and is bright red. Could that cause redness in my urine?

I took this medication for the first time last night and within 2hrs, I was sweating, stomach cramps, blackingout, hallucinating spiders, I was vomitting and diareah at the same time, dehydrated, I past out for I am unsure of how long while sitting on the toilet. I did not sleep at all and still feel a bit off today. I went back to the pharmacist who recommend it and advised her of what happened.

I've used this medication couple of times for infrequent bowel movements and it gives me really bad stomach cramps. I always have a feeling that I have to go. And 1 dose really doesn't do anything.

I have IBS and diverticulosis and wanted something easy to use and that would do away with any straining. I take 1 or 1/2 50mg tablet upon going to bed and have done so for about 2 years. I am 87 years old and have been hospitalized at least 2 times for diverticulitis which I do not want to reocur thence the stool softener. If there are long term effects I would liked to know what they are.

I have CHRONIC constipation which goes away only when I eat the PERFECT diet, drink TONS of water, and exercise daily. My GP said sodium docusate could be taken daily, indefinitely...however, in spite of a very healthy diet, daily exercise, and plenty of water...after a year or more of taking it, I have developed fingernail conditions symptomatic of malnutrition (flattened, ridged, bumpy, brittle,),(frequent) severe cramps in my feet, and more. I completely stopped taking sodium docusate last week and immediately the cramps stopped. What a relief! I am using a few tablespoons a day of ground flaxseed instead of sodium docusate, and it seems to work. I hope my other symptoms go away, as well.Read More Read Less

Caused severe constipation (4+ days) and rectal bleeding. BM's were fine and timely until this drug was given to me in the hospital. Was having 3-4 movements a day until they gave me this drug as part of their normal procedures, after which it was 4 days until my next movement, which caused severe pain, bleeding. It caused hardening of the stool and slowed all abdominal motility and caused severe bloating and gas.

In 2011 I was diagnosed with Diviticuli caused through excessive straining when passing a motion. As a stoll softener I find this drug works very well, I take 3 at night and two in the morning, every day as prescribed by my GP. I also drink half a glass of prune juice a day which I find also to be of great help. I only get pains once or twice a year as a result of this treatment.

I experienced stomach pain and cramps in less than a week. The doctor said to take two a day because I had frequent, small bowel movements that irritated hemorrhoids.

I have had chronic constipation for about 5 years, probably due to other prescription medications I am taking. I take 3 pills a day, drink plenty of fluids and eat lots of raw vegetables and whole grains. I have seen no relief from taking the medication. I will be talking to my doctor about something that may be more effective and offer some relief,
