As a RA patient, my doctor and I looked at many scrips for this disease, didn't like the chance of all the side effects of some, this seemed easy to use with the least amount of side effects. After taking the meds for 3 years, my doctor pronounced me : In Remission : and told me to come back in 6 months. All I heard was the words, In Remission, and then quit taking the meds that day. I went alo...

Just started today. Hope it works! I read some of the previous comments. Scarey!!!! Hope I don't experience their side effects, especially the hair loss.

although i found the drug effective, after a couple of years i developed severe night sweats and still had trouble sleeping even with the use of deseryl, without which my sleep would be minimal. i also experience quite a bit of hair loss. i was alternating 1 and 2 doses daily. i decreased this to 1 daily and then to 1 every other day. night sweats are better but still bothersome. has anyone else had this side effect?

Turns out this medication has a SULFA component that I am allergic to, resulting in severe allergic skin rash/itching after 3 weeks of taking it for SLE - newly diagnosed... Too bad because until I had the allergic reaction it seemed to be helping lessen my fatique. If I was not allergic to it, I think it would have worked very well. I would advise trying it AS LONG AS YOU DO NOT HAVE A SULFA ALLERGY.

I was given plaquenil when I was first told I had RA and altho I took it for about 2 to 3 months before I noticed any pain relief, I stayed on it ( 1 tablet daily). I then stopped taking it even tho I felt much better, because my white blood cell count was dropping, which I discovered is a rare side effect of taking Plaquenil. My pain came back after being off the med. for 6 months, and after talking to a new Rheumatologist, found out that it's the RA that most likely is the cause of lowered white cell count. Therefore I decided to go back on Plaquenil because the RA pain is getting so bad. I would say that the Plaquenil takes away about 75% of the pain & inflamation for me (1 200 mg. tablet per day) Maybe if I took 2 tablets a day ( I tried 2 but had bad stomach distress), I would be 100% pain free, who knows. I do think Plaquenil works fairly well, instead of taking aspirin type pain killers which have more serious side effects and I do not want to try the latest injection-type meds. due to their very serious side effects.Read More Read Less

I do not have the rashes anymore, and it has reduced my muscle weakness almost completly. I still have mild joint pain, but nothing like before. It's so easy to take, and I have not had any side effects - I am due for an eye checkup though. My prescription ran out recently, & I was off the Meds for 4 days & my rash started to come back, & my joints started to really hurt, & by the 4th day my thigh muscles felt extremely weak again. After being back on the Meds for 4 days, I was back to my normal - rashes disappeared, joint pain mostly subsided, and my thigh muscles were fine climbing 2 flights of stairs to my apartment. I take 100mgs per day, I plan to ask my Doctor - if my eyes are ok- if we increase the dose will my joint pain totally subside.Read More Read Less

After being on numerous other RA drugs, this is the only one so far that is OK for me. After three years, however, I am beginning to see less benefit. I have very few flare ups, but my joints are still eroding away which makes the pain level continue to increase. If another option becomes available, I will switch.
