I ahve chronic constipation because of IBS since I was 20 years old and I am now 41. I have tried everything offered to me to remedy this problem. Nothing has ever worked like Amitiza has. Finally, I have relief and an answer.

Lubiprostone has given me relief. I have had IBS with constipation for 30 years. Many different medicines I have tried ,this has helped tremendously. Only after a 4 day hospital stay for colitis was this given. Only side effects are I have constant mild bowel contractions. Only annoying at night. It affects my sleep but won’t stop taking this.

It has been slightly less than a month since I was prescribed this A/L medication for inability to completely evacuate and fecal anal impaction, and let me tell you the very first morning that I took it it felt like I had my own little helper inside pushing my fecal matter pieces that were stuck right out the door! (Like a tv commercial ‘’little human’ literally!) It was amazing as I was not diagnosed as needing to be ‘gluten-free’ until I was in my late 50’s, and also diagnosed with IBS. My colon is so sludged up from not eating right and never being able to get a good colon scan that I am not even able to get a colon scan, I drink all the barium liquid crap that they give me and then after the scan they say yea, looks like it didn’t clean it and they show me the scan and it looks all shaded except for one or two small spots where a lighter smear looks like a dirty window swipe. I always had bowel problems accompanied by severe stomach aches and severe constipation, intermittent with bouts of painful diarrhea my entire lifetime. My DIET and drinking enough water played a HUGE part in my bowel and intestinal health. Once I found out that I always needed to be on a “Fod Map” diet, life started to make more sense so now when I “cheat” and stray off of my Fod Map routine, this stuff does the trick and I am back on track again. I use to live on enemas, laxatives, prunes, fiber, and figs. My Gastro Doc advised me to eat 2 kiwis each day and while sometimes it helps that doesn’t always work. Even though most of the time I eat gluten-free, I still have trouble with gluten-free breads, pasta and pizza as my gut is so backed up from all the years I ate all the bad stuff not knowing that I should have been eating all the good stuff. I can understand depression symptoms as when you are a child and teen going through this and no one knows that you are going through this hell and they don’t know what to do to help you they say things like, you need to get a grip on your emotions and your nerves, you let things get to you too easy. Physical health ailments definitely can lead to anxiety and mental health issues. So far so good, I hope it keeps working as Colace was the other choice prior to this and it became ineffective after several doses.Read More Read Less

I started with the 8 mcg dose twice daily, which immediately gave me hours of diarrhea, and continued to do so until, after a few months, it gradually became less and less effective. I "limped along" with it by taking dulcolax before my morning dose. Back to diarrhea. I finally got in to see a GI P.A., who increased the dose to 24 mcg, and diarrhea came back until this dose also became less effective. On the higher dose, my sense of taste changed and my fodmap sensitivities got worse. I also had increased gas and bloating (painful), upper abdominal bloating immediately after eating. I lost 10 lbs in two months, not being able to eat well. She now has me trying a different prescription med. No diarrhea, and food flavors taste more normal. Far less gas, bloating and pain. I started Lubiprostone for chronic idiopathic constipation that I've had basically most of my life--I'm 64. I had been taking an OTC stool softener for awhile, which worked well for me but my doctor thought we should try lubiprostone. Results were severe diarrhea for the first few weeks on 2 pills a day. My GI recommended one pill daily with a meal. So I did that for a couple of weeks, diarrhea stopped, but I became constipated, no surprise. It's been downhill since then. I've been taking the pill 2ce daily, with breakfast and dinner, but I'm basically constipated. I go every 2-3 days, but have to strain, and it's still difficult. I plan to call my GI this week for a change.Read More Read Less

Not effective, at least for me. Lots of gases and bloating. A waste of money!

This worked really well restroom wise. But it caused me to not be able to breathe for a while. Ended up switching to linzess because I thought it was an allergy. It's a scary thing when you can't breathe. Linzess doesn't work nicely bathroom wise. I highly recommend this product anyway because not everyone reacts to medicine the same. It made bathroom time pure cathartic.

I am a 57 year old female in fairly good physical shape; however, I've had constipation issues all my life. I've been taking this for about 2 yrs and have been very satisfied with it. I do take it with Colace 2x per day. I tried once per day but with minimal results. I've always had gas problems so I cannot address whether this has increased or decreased with use of Amitiza (I take 24mcg 2x per day). Patiently waiting for generic as Amitiza is quite expensive even with my insurance.

Well I am not constipated any more. Thats because I now have severe soupy poopy! Can it be healthy to go like this all the time? Is there a happy medium? I have to be settled at home when I take this and I am on the minimum dosage.

I was switched to this medication when Zelnorm was taken off the market. Not as effective, and found it to work better with stool softeners. I have a lot of bloating and gas with this medication as well. Unlike Zelnorm too, when Amitiza begins to work, I must be near a restroom. I have not felt any better with the use of this drug.

I have been taking 24 mcg twice daily since May 12 and the medicine has not helped me. My insurance company does not pay for this. Also, I am taking Miralax once daily. I am still gassy, constipated, bloated, and light cramping. I have no clue what the next step is since my gasteronologist has not diagnose me? I guess I will find out June 25.

I have no idea if it REALLY works or not. I also take daily stool softeners, Glycolax and 30 grams of fiber. With all of this, some days I do have a BM, some days I don't. That's my form of IBS. Before the IBS no problem. Does the drug work? Can't say it does or not. Sure can't say it works that well for me or I wouldn't need all that other stuff, would I?
