My story...wow. I could write a novel. Well, to summarize. I began antidepressants at the age of 13. By age 24, I had my first bout with MDD and was hospitalized for suicidal ideations. Two years later, another episode. This time, with 24/7 thoughts of SI. Except this time, I was done being the guinea pig of cocktails of different prescription combinations. There was absolutely nothing, nothing le...

I've been on anti-depressants since I was 30, about 20 years ago. I switched to Lexapro about 20 years ago, when Prozac sort of stopped working. Lexapro worked initially, but I found it was very volatile...it would work for a while, but then suddenly it wouldn't. And when it wouldn't work it seemed to work against me. It was almost like I was going through withdrawal, even though I was taking a consistent dose. It baffled me and my doctor. The only thing we could do was to keep increasing the dose so that I was up to 20 MG a day. Ultimately, he thought of the MTHFR test and we discovered that I'm homozygous, which means I don't process folic acid found in wheat flour. What's worse, folic acid actually prevents the forms of folate that I can process from crossing the brain barrier. Thus, it was probably my diet which was causing the variability in the Lexapro. I ceased eating foods with fortified wheat flour and starting taking Deplin. Within a month I had to reduce my Lexapro dose to 10 mg because after years of having an erratic serotonin deficit, I now leveled-off with too much serontin. After these adjustments, I feel better than I have in years. I order it through the mail and it's not so expensive. definitely a "10". Read More Read Less

Since running out of Deplin 5 days ago, I've realized just how much it was helping me. I suffer from depression that zaps me of energy and Deplin really helped to boost my energy level. I will not let myself run out again!

I have only been taking a few days. Took years ago when I was on lamictal because it reduces folate levels. Hope it works again. Anyway, I have heard a lot of people complain about the price. DO NOT go to your pharmacy. Your doctor can send a prescription directly to Brand Direct Health. My portion went from $128 at pharmacy to $65 with shipping at Brand Direct. You do have to get a script for a 90 day supply though but if it works for you then it's worth it.

As a food/medication, there is no way this could cause side effects. I am off anti-depressants for the first time in forever. I feel so much better, am not a zombie, and do not have the other side effects I have lived with for years. I am amazed and thrilled!

This medication has made a significant positive impact on my life. I have been on it for approximately 14-16 weeks since writing this review. It takes time for it to take effect so if you are on it and not seeing results, stick to it. It took me almost 10 weeks to finally start noticing an effect. Additionally, I had some side effects like heart palpitations, increased anxiety, depression and fatigue but these side effects eventually went away after a few weeks. I was told my doctor that this is to be expected. Before taking this medication I had moderate to severe social anxiety, moderate to severe depression, chronic fatigue, nausea, diarrhea, excessive salivation, pain, lower pain threshold and on and on. This medication has significantly improved these symptoms. I wake up from bed not feeling groggy or disoriented, instead I am full of energy. My anxiety has lowered and my depression is almost non-existent. My physical endurance has increased and so has my memory. Everyday my symptoms seem to be improving.Read More Read Less

I have been treated for depression for many years. In the las t six years my 37 yr marriage ended, my brother was kidnapped and murder and my sister -in-law (very close to me) died. No matter how many lifestyle changes I made, how much therapy I received and what medicines I was on I couldn't get past the feeling of having a lump in my throat like I was to start crying any minute, even on very good days. As soon as I started taking Deplin I began to feel better and after a week or so I woke up one day feeling "serene." No lump in my throat, like having a huge weight lifted off my shoulders. I've been on it for six weeks and I feel better than I have in decades.Read More Read Less

The 2nd time I took it I suffer from 4 horrific days of mania. My husband had to hide all of the drugs in the house and I had 3 hour screaming rant accusing my husband of everything possible in our 48 year marriage, But it gets worse! I called the dr. the next day and never got further than the office manager who I have reported for bed management. I told her I had told her I tripped over my dog and was afraid I had hurt her, I also said I had taken Lunesta and valium at 10pm the night before. She hung up on me! I we to bed. The next thing I know, 2 cops had broken into my house and were standing at the bottem of my bed holding guns on me! I picked up my cel and the cop took it away and said get up, your going to the hospital for a drug overdose. What overdose? For over 1 hour I was beaten and abused by 2 Albuquerque cops including having handcuffs slammed on my wrist for no reason, but she slammed them so hard she chipped a bone in my wrist and I have lost use of wrist. I could go on, but you get my drift. My blood tests came back completely clean of ALL medications. DEPLIN is contraindicated with over 500 prescription OTC!!!! Buyer BewareRead More Read Less

I took Deplin briefly to give anti-depressant a boost. I didn't notice any difference except a mild manic effect. I had insomnia for nearly two weeks, although I didn't experience any paranoia or rage. I also experienced restless legs while on this. After four weeks of using Deplin my doctor told me to stop taking it and the restless legs and insomnia went away. I don't think it did anything useful for me.

I have suffered from depression all my life, although I didn't realize at the time that was what it was. I turned to many destructive methods to feel better, as I knew something was off, but had no way of knowing how to help myself. I'm lucky to be here writing this review. I recently had genetic testing that revealed the MthFr anomaly. I started taking Deplin 6 mths ago and the whole world has opened up me. I feel whole, clear and a participant in my life. My Dr. told me of a place called Brand Direct Pharmacy and I now get a 3mth supply of the 15mg for $178.00. The place for the Genetic Testing is called Health Diagnostic Labs, Inc. in Richmond, Virginia They will file with your insurance but if your insurance doesn't pay you never receive a bill. I have had two test done and they have only sent me an Explanation of Benefits. I have never received a bill. My Dr. told me I wouldn't and I didn't. You can ask your doctor to send blood sample to them as well. No I am not affiliated with them in any way. I'm just grateful and passing the info along. Be well. Read More Read Less

I first used Deplin to ease off Depression medication (which caused side effects.) I now use Deplin on an as needed basis and I find it very effective for depression, and it effects are noticed same day for me. Sometimes I take a full dose, sometimes I take a half a dose, many days I take nothing. I have been using it on and off for 2-3 years. I have no side effects and I really like it. I have not used depression medications since weaning off of them 3 years ago.

I was taking Deplin for depression. Don't know if it helped or not. Just the thought of taking something that could help me feel better, helped me feel a little brighter. Placebo effect? Don't know. Outrageously expensive. Had to pay $376.00 for a 3 month supply, and that was WITH a PDR card discount. I can't afford that, again. Tasted like fish oil to me. Decided to just take fish oil, (Krill Oil) instead. Much cheaper. Two different Dr.'s had told me in past to take fish oil anyway. Going to follow advice from two of my Dr.'s and take high quality pharmaceutical grade vitamins, a probiotic, and the Krill Oil. The probiotic helps you digest your food and vitamins properly. Have been doing this now for 2-3 weeks, and feeling better everyday! (was out of vitamins for about 3 weeks). Read More Read Less

I was diagnosed with kidney damage (UPJ), very extensive blood work found high homocysteine levels and MThFr. My doctor recommended Deplin in addition to the Wellbutrin that I have taken for years. What a difference! First month in years that I haven't felt depressed or some level of dispare even though I've had to go through a very difficult reconstructive kidney operation. I wish that a doctor would have picked up on this YEARS ago when they first found the MThFr anamoly in my bloodwork! Will be interesting to see if it changes the morphology of my red blood cells along with improving my general outlook on life. I feel that it is very important to report this to anyone related to me by blood. Read More Read Less

I have read about 50 reviews and to my surprise, there is no mention of WHY Deplin is prescribed to a patient with depression. The biochemistry is complicated, but to make a long story short, I offer the following. Folate is a B vitamin that is a co-enzyme the body uses to manufacture neurotransmitters (eg serotonin, norepinephrine, dopamine) in the brain. A deficiency in these neurotransmitters is implicated in depression. Some people (& it is rather common) have a genetic deficiency of an enzyme that converts folate into a form that can cross the blood brain barrier (L-methylfolate) where it needs to be, to be effective. This is why "just regular folate” (the pharmaceutical or that found in our diet) is fine for some people, but inadequate for those with the genetic mutation who need to take folate in the isomeric form of L-methyl folate. The genetic testing is covered by many insurance companies. The test is for the gene that codes for methylene tetra hydro folate reductase. For short, the disorder is referred to as an MTHFR Deficiency. This is why some people have a miraculous response, & others not. Deplin should not be prescribed for patients who are not deficient as there can be (rare but serious) allergic reactions. I have the deficiency and unfortunately had a bad allergic reaction. I may try the generic as I think the reaction is most likely due to the inert [hum??? That’s a bit of an oxymoron :-)] carriers which may be different in the generic manufacturing. BTW, I was only able to take Deplin for 1 week. I felt no improvement, but it can take upwards of a few weeks to make a differenceRead More Read Less

Took Deplin to enhance the performance of anti-depressants. Made me feel achy and miserable. Stopped taking it and immediately felt better.
