I've been taking Ambien for about 5 yrs. for chronic insomnia and night terror/nightmares. It has been a lifesaver for me but it IS a tricky drug. Take it when you are actually ready to go to sleep and you are already IN BED. Don't get back up!!! or you will be walking around the house eating, having weird conversations with your significant other about things that you would probably not be talkin...

Although it helps you fall asleep, it often stays in your system for greater than 8 hours. Per 60 minutes, it can impair cognition equivalent to being legally drunk. It was not safe to take on days that I was working.

Have only taken for one week. I have multiple problems - getting to sleep, staying asleep, awakening too early. Ambien gets me to sleep, but thus far has only ensured a 4-5 hour block before awakening.

Never had a problem getting to sleep until about a year ago. I was using OTC sleep aids, which sometimes worked, sometimes didn't. Finally got fed up with not being able to either get to sleep or fall back asleep when awoken and spoke with my doctor. He prescribed 10 mg, but said I could cut in half to 5 mgs. I have been taking 5 mgs for a few weeks and it has worked great. I takes about 20 minutes to put me to sleep and I can get to sleep again if awaken by pet or child. Norm night sleep for me is seven hours and I have no problem getting out of bed in the morning. I am concerned about the possible "habit forming" side effects of drug though and will check with doc about a different sleep aid for long term use. Read More Read Less

Gives a good night's sleep with no hangover, as long as you have at least 8 hours to sleep. A lifesaver!

Ambien manages the insomnia. However, I take 20 mg at night. I also sleep walk and sleep eat almost ever night. My short term memory is shot! Is there another sleep aid medication some one can advise me on? I tried Lunesta bit it didn't work.

An effective & fast-acting sleep aid. I had no side effects. Some ppl complain of amnesia and even hallucinations but I had no such problems & don't know anyone who did. It's the only sleep aid I've tried that has continued to work for my chronic insomnia. All the others I tried - benzodiazepines, trazodone, antihistamines like Benadryl and Atarax, Lunesta - either didn't work at all, or stopped working after a few nights, but I'm still taking the same dose of Ambien after several years, no tolerance. My only complaint is that it only lasts a few hours. I was not impressed with Ambien CR. Oh, also, the 10mg dose that is supposed to work for everybody, it doesn't work for me & I know several others who say the same. So if 10 doesn't work don't give up on it, 15 or 20 might still work. It's most reliable if you take it on an empty stomach, so if you tried it after eating or with food, that might be another reason why it wouldn't work.Read More Read Less

It's great for short-term, occasional sleeplessness. It works quickly, and for me, no side effects in the morning as long as I dont try to get up too soon after taking the pill. It seems to need several hours to be allowed to work.

I havent been on ambien very long little over a month and find that it is very effective that i get a good nights sleep. i have to get up at 4am for work so i take it around 7-8pm so i can get a full 7-8 hrs of sleep. i used to wake up several times a night but now i dont since my doctor prescribed me ambien. i reccommend it very highly for anyone who has problems sleeping all through the night.
