What best describes your visit?

I have been recently diagnosed with eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) and have questions.

What to Ask Your Doctor

  • Why do I have eosinophilic esophagitis?

Your doctor can explain to you what may have led to this condition, from risk factors to possible allergens.

  • What symptoms should I watch out for?

While some symptoms may be mild, others such as your throat narrowing, can lead to emergency situations like choking.

  • Do I need to see a specialist?

To manage EoE, your doctor may recommend a gastroenterologist, allergist, and maybe a nutritionist to help with a diet plan to avoid foods you have sensitivities to.

  • What are my treatment options?

Speak with your doctor about whether or not medication is necessary.

  • Will my EoE go away on its own?

This is a lifelong condition, but your doctor can help you find ways to improve symptoms, live comfortably, and develop a treatment plan that works best for you.

I am currently treating eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) and have questions.

What to Ask Your Doctor

  • Do I have to be on medications to treat EoE?

You may be prescribed medications to help with symptoms of the condition. In May 2022, the FDA approved the first treatment specifically for EoE. Talk to your doctor about whether this option is right for you.

  • Are there ways other than prescriptions to help with this condition?

Your doctor might recommend allergy tests or elimination diets in addition to medications to help with your symptoms. Each treatment plan is unique.

  • What side effects can I expect?

Each treatment option, particularly medications, can lead to side effects. Your doctor will fill you in on what your specific treatment may lead to, and offer help to lower the risks.

  • When should I start to see improvements in my health?

It’s important to know how long a treatment takes to kick in, so you can be aware if it isn’t working as expected. Ask your doctor for a timeline so you can take note if anything seems to be wrong.

  • Will I need surgery?

To diagnose EoE, an endoscopy – a simple procedure that doesn’t require you to stay overnight in the hospital – may be necessary. Also, esophageal dilation, which stretches the esophagus, may be considered a treatment option.
