    Your doctor can check your white blood cell count to see whether it’s low.

  • Why do I have all these large bruises?

    Your doctor can test you to see whether your blood platelet count is low.

     

  • Can you suggest any complementary care that might help with my MDS?

    You can find out whether complementary treatments like supplements, acupuncture, or massage are safe and might help you feel better.

  • Do you know of a clinical trial I might participate in?

    Taking part in a clinical trial could give you access to new treatments that might help you.

What to Ask Your Doctor

  • How is my treatment working?

    Your doctor will do some follow-up tests so you can discuss the results and any symptoms you may be having to learn about how your treatment is working.

  • Which side effects or symptoms should I let you know about right away?

    Your doctor can tell you which symptoms need immediate attention and what you should do if you have them.

  • If my treatment isn’t working, what options do I have?

    Your doctor can tell you about options you haven’t tried yet, and what you might expect if you switch treatment.

     

  • Do I need a blood transfusion?

    Your doctor will test your level of red blood cells to see whether your anemia is serious enough that you need a transfusion.

  • What if I start to feel overwhelmed about my MDS?

    Your doctor can suggest a mental health professional you can see if your condition is causing distress, anxiety, or depression.

  • Is it OK if I exercise with my MDS?

    Your doctor can guide you to be physically active, depending on your symptoms and side effects, and let you know about any limits.

  • Do I need to change what I eat during treatment?

    You can find out about certain foods that might help you feel better or add important nutrients you need.

  • Should I lose weight?

    Your doctor can let you know whether your weight is at a healthy level for your condition.

     

  • What can I do to get better sleep?

    You can learn ways to get more rest to be able to handle your everyday activities better.

  • I’ve tried to stop smoking before; can you help me quit?

    Not smoking can positively affect your health, which can help you during treatment.
