What are the side effects of the ketogenic diet for epilepsy?

Right after your child starts the diet, she may feel tired. Other side effects include:

If your child has side effects, tell her doctor. You may be able to treat them with changes to her diet or medication.

If the side effects are too much for your child, ask the doctor about other epilepsy diets, like the modified Atkins diet and the low glycemic index treatment diet. They can be a little easier to handle.

  • Constipation
  • Kidney stones
  • Slow growth and low weight
  • Weak bones (which may be more likely to break)
  • High cholesterol
