PCP (primary care physician or primary care provider)

PCP is an abbreviation used to refer to primary care physicians or primary care providers. This is the doctor, nurse practitioner, clinical nurse specialist, physician assistant, or even health care clinic that provides and coordinates your health care. When you join a health plan, you may be asked to choose a PCP who will oversee your care. Some health plans, such as HMOs, may require you to get a referral from your PCP before you can get care from a specialist.
