How do proton pump inhibitors treat heartburn and reflux?
PPIs block acid production more effectively and for a longer time than H2 blockers. They're also good for protecting the esophagus from acid so that inflammation can heal:
PPIs are best taken an hour before meals.
- Dexlansoprazole (Dexilant)
- Esomeprazole (Nexium)
- Lansoprazole (Prevacid)
- Omeprazole (Prilosec, Zegerid)
- Pantoprazole (Protonix)
- Rabeprazole (Aciphex)
