What should you expect from egg retrieval during in vitro fertilization (IVF)?

ANSWER

During this step, your doctor will locate follicles in the ovary with ultrasound and remove the eggs with a hollow needle. This can take up to an hour. Your eggs then will be mixed in the lab with the sperm donated that day. While you and your partner go home, the fertilized eggs are kept in the clinic. It may take up to five days for the embryo to reach a more advanced blastocyst stage.
