Linn Goldberg, MD

Linn Goldberg, MD, is a professor of medicine and head of the division of health promotion and sports medicine at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland. Goldberg, who earned his MD from George Washington University School of Medicine, has worked in the area of drug abuse prevention for adolescents for the past several years with a focus on prevention of substance abuse among adolescent athletes. He is the principal investigator or co-principal investigator of:

  • ATLAS (Athletes Training & Learning to Avoid Steroids), a program for boys' high school sport teams. ATLAS reduced new use of anabolic steroids, alcohol use, drinking and driving, other illicit drug use (marijuana, amphetamines and narcotics) and taking nutritional supplements
  • SATURN (Student Athlete Testing Using Random Notification), a school based version of the random, no-advance warning drug testing program used by the United States Olympic Committee (USOC)
  • ATHENA (Athletes Targeting Healthy Exercise & Nutrition Alternatives), a school-based team-centered prevention program for female athletes on middle and high school sports, dance and cheerleading teams, designed to reduce disordered eating and use of body shaping and other drugs, while promoting healthy nutrition and exercise
  • PHLAME (Promoting Healthy Living: Assessing More Effects),  a program to enhance the exercise and nutrition of firefighters

Goldberg is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and is a United States Olympic Committee crew chief for drug surveillance. He is also a member of the Safe, Disciplined and Drug Free Schools expert panel of the U.S. Department of Education's Safe and Drug-Free Schools Program. Goldberg has been a special consultant to the U.S. Inspector General in the Department of Health and Human Services and has been featured in workshops on drug prevention designed for adolescents. He is a member of the Clinical Research Center Committee at Oregon Health & Science University and the Occupations and Environmental Medicine Subcommittee of the University Medical Associates Inc.

Goldberg is the co-author and editor of Exercise for Prevention and Treatment of Illness. He is also the co-author of The History and Physical Examination Casebook and The Healing Power
