What are signs of advanced emphysema?

ANSWER

If you have advanced emphysema, you may:

  • Have a "barrel chest" caused by larger-than-normal lungs
  • Wheeze or have a hard time getting air out of your lungs
  • Have rounded fingertips (“clubbing”)
  • Purse your lips when you breathe, like you’re blowing a kiss
  • Have low oxygen levels in your blood (hypoxemia)
  • Have high carbon dioxide levels in your blood (hypercarbia) -- emphysema makes it hard to exhale properly
  • Have a blue tinge (cyanosis) to your lips
