Diseases that can affect your airways include:

  • Asthma: It can make you wheeze and short of breath. Allergies, infections, or pollution can be triggers.
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): This lung condition keeps you from exhaling normally, which makes breathing difficult.
  • Chronic bronchitis: A form of COPD that produces constant cough.
  • Emphysema: This is when air gets trapped in your damaged lungs. A hallmark of this disease is trouble blowing air out.
  • Acute bronchitis: A sudden infection of the airways, usually by a virus.
  • Cystic fibrosis: A genetic condition where mucus doesn’t clear out from the bronchi and leads to repeated lung infections.
