Toni Braxton has Lupus

Medically Reviewed by Poonam Sachdev on November 15, 2021

Toni Braxton is one of the 1.5 million Americans who have lupus. She was diagnosed with the condition in 2008 during her residency in Las Vegas. The performer had a heart attack, and while she was undergoing treatment for it, she learned about her lupus diagnosis.

She admits that coming to terms with a chronic condition was a difficult journey, but over two years, she learned how to manage the condition and slow down.

Looking back at her symptoms, she says that she felt tired all the time. She was also unable to keep her blood pressure stable. One day, she felt a lot of pressure on her chest and went to the emergency room.

The doctors told her she had a heart attack. Initially, they said she might need a heart transplant, but after some time, she was told that this was unnecessary and she could perform again.

Toni Braxton's Lupus Lessons

Toni Braxton has opened up about her condition in the past too. She says that lupus has taught her how to slow down. The condition also made her realize that it is OK to have bad days.

She compares it to putting an oxygen mask on yourself first in the plane before helping others. She says that she has to pay attention to herself first. Only then will she be able to be a better mom, sister, and parent.

If you have lupus, you should also adopt this approach, since there is no shame in taking a day off due to your condition. Taking some of these steps can help manage the condition:

  • Get sufficient rest and sleep.
  • Have a support system around you that you can go to for help.
  • Learn to track your symptoms so that you can tell if a flare is coming.
  • Set realistic life goals for yourself to lower stress
