Getting a migraine can knock your whole day out of whack.

You might already have a plan for what to do when a migraine strikes. Take your medication, get a caffeinated drink, lie down in a quiet place and close your eyes. But what if it happens when you're not at home and finding a bed is isn't possible? Here are a few tips to help you prepare.

Ask for help. Get someone in your corner who knows what to do when your migraine hits. They may call your job, help out at home, pick up the kids, or find someone who can handle things while you're recovering. He or she can also find you a ride home because driving can be dangerous.

Next, have a headache kit. Be sure to carry your medication with you at all times. And stock your car or desk with other comforts of home -- an eye mask or dark sunglasses for light protection, or a heating pad to ease muscle tension.

Tell your boss, friends, and neighbors about your migraines. They'll be more understanding and -- if you can't perform a routine task -- they'll know to help. Putting this system in place

will help you avoid the headaches of daily life when a migraine comes your way.
