Hasya Yoga

Hasya yoga is based on the idea that laughter is good for your body and mind. Some research suggests that laughter may decrease stress, improve your immune system, and enhance bloodflow. Other benefits of laughter as therapy are that anyone can do it, and there are no side effects. It may help with pain, too. Some studies show that people aren't as bothered by their pain when they laugh. To find a practitioner near you, search online for "laughter yoga."

Create Laughter

The idea behind hasya yoga is to create your own laughter, not to laugh in response to something funny. The practice is based on the idea that the body can't tell the difference between real laughter and fake. During a session, laughter is combined with yogic breathing. Participants do exercises that help stimulate laughter, which leads to real, contagious belly laughs and guffaws. The goal is to build up to 15 to 20 minutes of laughter with short breaks for breathing exercises.

Prompt: Start laughing!

Laughter Tips

It may take some time to learn how to laugh just for the sake of laughing. These tips may help:

* Start with fake laughter and see if it turns into real laughter.

* Try giggling to get laughter going.

* Keep your chin up while you're laughing, as this makes it easier to move air in and out.

* Be playful with your laughter; open your mouth wide and laugh from your belly.

* Try laughing in different positions, such as standing, sitting, or lying on your back with your knees bent towards your chest.

Prompt: Learn to laugh.

Look for Laughter

Even if you can't find a laughter yoga group near you, look for ways to add humor to your life. Instead of serious dramas, watch sitcoms or humorous programs on TV. Invite friends over for comedy evenings -- make some popcorn and watch funny movies. Host a joke party. Buy comedy books and CDs. At most, adding humor to your life may help take your mind off pain. At the very least, it will make you smile.

Prompt: Laugh with friends.
