Why is breastfeeding best for your baby?

ANSWER

Breast milk is the perfect baby food, especially in the first 4 months or so. It:

  • Is always available
  • Is free
  • Has the perfect proportion of nutrients, including protein, carbohydrates, fat, and calcium
  • Is easily digestible
  • Gives more protection against infections in the first months, when these can be the most serious
  • Can help prevent SIDS, sudden infant death syndrome
  • May protect against allergies and asthma in the future
  • May lower a baby's odds of obesity in the future
  • May have some fatty acids that promote brain development
