Nov. 5, 2021 -- Joseph Maldonado-Passage, better known as “Joe Exotic” on the Netflix docuseries Tiger King, announced on social media that he’s been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer.

“Doctors called me in today to break the news that my prostate biopsy came back with an aggressive cancer,” he said on Twitter. “Carole Will have her own party over this! Say a prayer everyone & be my voice [of] love #joeexotic #exclusive #breakingnews #freejoeexotic #justiceforjoeexotic

Carole Baskin and Maldonado-Passage had a long-running feud that was the focus of Tiger King. Maldonado-Passage, 58, is in prison for hiring people to try to kill Baskin, an animal rights activist and critic of his exotic animal zoo in Oklahoma, and for federal wildlife law violations.

Maldonado-Passage’s lawyer, John M. Phillips, told CNN that his client has had tests for numerous medical problems.

"The PSA test is a blood test used primarily to screen for prostate cancer. It was high. He finally obtained biopsies. They revealed cancer. Medical care is different in a prison environment and fewer options are available," Phillips told CNN.

In a letter posted on Instagram, Maldonado-Passage says he’s innocent of the charges and wants to “go home and get treatment on my own or enjoy what life I have left with my loved ones! Say a prayer everyone & be my voice.”

He was sentenced to 22 years in prison in 2019. A federal appeals court upheld the conviction in July but vacated the sentence, so Maldonado-Passage will be resentenced while being held in prison, CNN reported.
