How does TNF cause inflammation?

ANSWER

Tumor necrosis factor (TNF) is a major player in the chain reaction of inflammation. When you have an infection, certain white blood cells release key "signaling" chemicals that tell other cells to cause inflammation. TNF is one of those chemicals. It signals some white blood cells to fight off infection, and it tells other cells to make other things, like the hormones that cause you to lose your appetite when you're sick.
