One of the biggest problems in schizophrenia is that people stop taking the medication. So the first important thing is to be aware of whether they're taking it or not. So it's very helpful if the family will monitor the medication that their loved one is supposed to take.

And if they have one of those little pill boxes that have the pills in it, that's very helpful. But it's important that they also watch the person take the medication because the compliance rate of taking the medication is about 50%. When the person is non-compliant then the family may want to suggest to the patient and to the doctor that they have the long-term Depo injections that can last from one to three months. That really improves the compliance.
