How is 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) used as a natural sleep aid?

ANSWER

5-HTP is a compound that your body makes from amino acid tryptophan. It boosts your levels of serotonin, which in turn helps make the “sleep hormone” called melatonin. Studies suggest that 5-HTP may ease symptoms of depression and anxiety. But there’s not enough evidence that it works for insomnia.
