June 27, 2022 -- Now that the U.S. Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade, a growing number of companies say they will cover employees’ expenses if they need to travel out of state to obtain abortions.

The Supreme Court ruling eliminated federal guarantees for abortion access and gives individual states the right to decide whether abortion will be allowed. Some estimates said 26 states are “certain or likely” to ban abortion outright. Residents in those states will probably have to travel to other states to obtain abortions and other reproductive services.

According to CNN, these are some of the corporations taking action to cover travel expenses for employees who need abortions: Microsoft, Apple, Meta, Disney, Uber, Netflix, Match Group, Comcast-Universal, Warner Bros. Discovery, Conde Nast, JP Morgan, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Kroger, Alaska Airlines, Goldman Sachs, Zillow, HP, HPE, Accenture, and Chobani.

Many of the companies spoke out on Friday, immediately after the court ruling was announced.

"No matter where our teammates are on their family planning journey — from contraception and abortion coverage, to pregnancy and family-building support through fertility, surrogacy and adoption benefits — we are here to support their decisions," Nike said in a Friday statement, according to CNN.

Other companies, such as Yelp and Starbucks, announced their policies in May after a draft of the decision was leaked to the media.

Coverage extends to spouses and dependents covered by the company medical plans in most cases. Some companies, including Bumble and Lyft, have said they’d donated to organizations that support women’s rights, such as Planned Parenthood, CNN said.

“Protection of reproductive rights is a critical business issue impacting our work force, our economy and progress toward gender and racial equity,” Levi Strauss said, according to The New York Times. “Given what is at stake, business leaders need to make their voices heard.”
