Tried Niaspan and had terrible flushing side effects. This seems to work better for me and no side effects. I also recommend Flax Plus cereal by Nature's Path. Each servings contains 500 mg of Omega 3 and it tastes good. This along with my medication have my lipid profile where it needs to be.

As compared to other drugs that were tried first such as zocor and like drugs which caused my skin to feel like it was on fire where as gemfibrozil has caused little side effects, just flushing at night is all which isn't fun but compared to the burning skin from the other drugs, it is liveable

I have taken this for at least 10 years for Triglycerides. It controls the condition but have anemia now and taking iron infusions. I am also going to have to change this to another drug because of Plan D limitations.I now also have gout on occasions and am wondering what else would be a good alternative? lso, should I continue taking this in spite of the plan D limitations??

The bottom line I see on here is the simple fact that most doctors are incompetent morons. You get a blood test and they write scrips for 5 different medicines and everything goes to hell and neither you, nor they, have a clue what to do. That's why the license says" practicing medicine". Here's the way you do it. Adress the critical problem first( generally BP). Take that med for 2 weeks. If there are no side effects ? Add med 2, say Gemfi. 2 weeks. All is well ? Add #3...say Lipitor.2 weeks. Still no problems. Continue with that system. I assure you one isnt going to be right for you and you can swith for 2 weeks again before going to drug # ____. That's the way a scientist does things. Drug dealers tell you take it all at once and come back for more in 30 days. Idiots. BTW Gem dropped my chol from 1000 to 450 with a little help from linaza and Omacor daily.Read More Read Less

Gemfibrozil is a dual purpose drug as several reviewers have noted. In 1977 at the age of 19 while serving in the USAF I had my cholesterol, HDL/LDL & total, and triglycerides tested. It was a new test and as I worked at the hospital I volunteered. Come to find out that my cholesterol was 421 and triglycerides 796. My doctor whom I worked for told me "you have a great heart for a 65 y/o man". Not so good as I was 19. Went on a specialized low fat, low carb diet and reduced the numbers by half within 60 days. My good (HDL) and bad (LDL) were inverted. Later in life about 8-10 years ago I started taking Gemfibrozil for my elevated triglycerides. The good news it took care of that issue and also my high cholesterol. I don't recall what my latest numbers were but they were well within normal limits (WNL). I have never really noted any side effects to speak of and am going to talk with my doctor about taking a break from the medication. I take about 7 other medications that I cannot stop like morphine and baclofen. Read More Read Less

I have been taking Gemfibrozil (600MG)for approx. 1 month, along with Simvastatin (80MG)but usually took them separately. On the morning of Sept 2, 2012, I took the two medications together. Approximately 2 hrs.later I started to flush and sweat profusely, and suffered from severe pain and burning in the upper abdomen and was rushed to the hospital. I spent 4 days in the hospital with diarrhea, and diagnosed with panchreatitis. No warning was given to me about the interaction between these two drugs. I asked my pharmacist afterward if there had been any bad reactions to the combination of these two drugs and he told me they could have deadly results if taken together. Read More Read Less

This med has proven to be very effective. My tri were 471 and now are 189. It has also boasted my HDL (good) level within normal range, along with a proper diet and exercise 4 to 5 times a week. I feel better and am much lighter in weight.
