I began Fosamax in 2005 with a diagnosis of severe osteoporosis of -3.8 at age 53. In 2011,my dexa scan was still-3.3, but I had no fractures. A random Vitamin D blood test showed I was severely deficient of vitamin D. I was put on 4000iu of vitamin D3 daily. My memory improved, my bone pain resolved, foot pain resolved, my vision improved, and urinary incontinence resolved, my diabetes improved! ...

No problem taking this medication. It is easy to swallow and only have to wait 15 minutes before having anything to eat or drink after taking the medications

I took fosamax for 4 years.I had a knee replacement 2 and a half years ago due to osteoporsis and arthiritis. I had great results and could not be happier until I started having trouble with my knee again. I had to have my knee replacement done over again and the Dr. said my tibia was desinagrating because of a side effect of the fosamax. Guess what? That was not on the warning of side effects. I could not believe my ears but both Drs. say it was the Fosamax. Now I have really bad hip and leg pain in th other leg. I am waiting to have a complete body bone scan. I am a little scared at what they will find. I don't recommend it for anyone knowing the pain and suffering it has caused me. There is a class action suit against Merck but they would not take me because everyone else in has been in the jaw or teeth. I guess my knee replacment was my weakest point.I wonder if ther is more people like me.Read More Read Less

My mother (80 years old) started taking this drug and experienced such severe lower back pain and leg cramps she spent 4 days in the hospital and needed morphine. She was also vomiting and experienced dizzy spells along with chest pain. She stopped this medication immediately. Not sure if this medicine has worked on her bone loss.

I am only 26 years old and have osteopenia from taking birth control. I used to be on Boniva and had such bad side effects like the painful joints that I felt like I was 95. I could hear my joints cracking. It was also very expensive. I switched to the generic of Fosamax and have had very little side effects. I have had only slight bone pain in my legs. No nauesa or gi upset. Very happy so far with this medication.

Only used one dose and had lots of extra body aches and pain this week. Also my resting pulse went up to 91 bpm. Not sure whether to keep taking to see if body adjusts. I also feel weak and tired.Could there be interaction with Arimidex???

I took 1 pill and the next day I was hurting in my Rt. shoulder and lower back. Day 2 I started having spasms in my left lower back. Day 3 pain increased. By day 4 my rt. thumb and wrist hurt. Day 5 both wrists and rt. thumb hurts. I did not get a return call from my doctor. Time for a new doctor...will never take another Fosamax

I have had good experience, and my bone densisty reports have improved greatly. However, I have been informed by some that I should have stopped taking it after 5 years and would like to know the protocol on that as I have been taking it for 11 years

I have been taking Fosamax for more than 3 years along with calcium plus D tablets. Four months ago, I began having pain in one hip. The orthopedist diagnosed it as bursitus and put me on Voltaren eventually. In January the pain became more pronounced. On the 21st, I awoke and could not walk. I called the doctor and was advised that I could see a specialist - in 10 days. For three days I could not stand, sit or lay down without being in a contorted position. Calling the doctor's office daily, I was finally told to go to the ER. At the ER, they injected morphine (which did nothing for the pain)and sent me home with oxycodone and skelaxin to control muscle spasms. After MRIs on my entire body and a full bone scan, no prognosis was given. I had two spinal injections with no relief. The doctor finally gave up. An appointment with a pain specialist is scheduled for late April. In the meantime, I guess I am supposed to live with the pain and lameness of the past two months. Ironically, my family doctor immediately told me to stop taking Fosamax. That was last Monday afternoon; I'd already taken my weekly dose that morning. At this point, I am praying that the pain and recurring spasms in my leg will fade or go away. Having lost an entire month of work/income, I still have to come up with the expense of doctors, tests and procedures. WHY hasn't the maker of Fosamax made this side effect public? If I hadn't called my family doctor out of frustration, I never would have known to stop taking the medication. Funny thing is, all the doctors I saw had a complete list of my meds but never questioned the possibility of side effects. Best advice - ALWAYS GET A SECOND OPPINION!Read More Read Less

I took one pill of fosamax in the morning and by 3am the next morning i woke out of sound sleep with severe back pain. of course i didn't get much sleep that night. i went to work in the morning as usual (just because i had to...i was the only one to do the work). i couldn't figure out where this pain came from, because i hadn't done anything different except take this pill. i use to make it a habit not to look at the hand out for the side effects for a medicine, just so i could give it a fair chance. however, that day, knowing that taking that pill was the only thing i had done differently, i went home at lunch time to read the little paper and found out that if you have severe back pain (which they say is not usual), you should immediately call your doctor. so i called my doctor and found out that i could see him 4 days later. so i made an appt. to see the dr. this pain made me feel like i was 90 years old. i could barely get in and out of my car and sitting at work was very difficult and then when i walk around I had to hold my body in a certain way as to not move it too much because of the pain.....it was horrible. i went three days like this. after a long day at work, all i could manage when i got home was to lay on the couch or bed for the rest of the evening. the morning that i had to go to the dr. i woke up pain free. i went anyway and the dr. grilled me as to whether i had done anything like exercise or anything unusual to get this back pain...of course i hadn't .. he told me that he thought that it was from the fosamax, but that i could try another pill the next week and see if it happens again....you can be sure that i did not take another pill. well, i still have osteoporosis, and recently i have been thinking about taking boniva ( my mom takes it with no problems), but then i went to the site like this one for people writing about their experiences with boniva and i am thinking that i will just live with my osteoporisis.....Read More Read Less

I was prescribed this drug when I moved from osteopenia to osteoporosis of the lumbar spine. I have been taking it weekly now for about two months. I don't know about it's effectiveness yet, but I developed constant aching in my jaws after the first week. Have stayed with Fosamax, hoping the ache would go away but it hasn't. I need dental work and I'm very worried about triggering the osteonecrosis of the jaw. I'm switching drugs, but they all look bad. Protelo (extremely popular in Europe, but not yet available in the U.S.) looks best. There are other things being researched - I just hope they get on the market soon.Read More Read Less

I was on Fosamax Oral for approx 3 years. I have been diagnosed with Osteopenia. I have heard that this drug has an affect on the jaw. I woke up one morning and I could not open my mouth. I have stopped taking this drug. It's been about 2 months but the side effects of my jaw still remain. My dentist says it's TMJ. I've had two bone mineral density tests which only revealed that the condition has not gotten worse but not any better. I am on calcium w/Vit D (1500mg) and take one daily. I personally do not like taking this drug and if I have to double up my calcium and eat foods to help maintain my bone health then I will do that. I would not recommend this drug to anyone.Read More Read Less
