I began Fosamax in 2005 with a diagnosis of severe osteoporosis of -3.8 at age 53. In 2011,my dexa scan was still-3.3, but I had no fractures. A random Vitamin D blood test showed I was severely deficient of vitamin D. I was put on 4000iu of vitamin D3 daily. My memory improved, my bone pain resolved, foot pain resolved, my vision improved, and urinary incontinence resolved, my diabetes improved! ...

No problem taking this medication. It is easy to swallow and only have to wait 15 minutes before having anything to eat or drink after taking the medications

This medication is listed on the TOP of several ototoxic drug lists. I took it for about 8 months before I read and read to find out what was causing my tinnitus. Tinnitus is awful and NEVER mentioned as a side-effect. Now I don't know if it's temporary or permanent damage. It's been three weeks since I stopped and the tinnitus continues. Be careful with this medication!!

User beware. I only took 3 doses. That was 5 months ago. Over night, my fingers, hands, knees and feet began to hurt. I grew large, hard lumps on the heels of my hands and on my right foot. Most days it is difficult to open a packet of sugar. I went ANA positive (cells attacking themselves) and had none of these issues minus minor arthritis in a thumb. Now I take a daily injection of a different med. Thanks a lot Fosamax. You turned me into an old lady in 3 weeks time. Incidentally, I do not have rheumatoid arthritis. Read More Read Less

Took this pill for the first time at 6:30 am and stayed up like it said. Walked my dogs at 8:00 like normal and noticed my knees hurt.Tried to jog at 8:30 my normal routine and could barely jog for the knee pain. Continued through that day and the next morning I called my doctor and told her I could barely walk and felt 100 years old, needed a walker, knees were in horrible pain, ankles hurt, ribs hurt and hips ached. She said I had an allergic reaction and to stop taking it.The next three days I could barely move.Saw her on Friday and she and her nurse were shocked at the difference from Monday when I was there. Got an injection of Ketorlac and prescription of Naproxen. I told her I had no intentions of living on pain pills but she assured me this would go away. I am 13 days out,my knees still hurt especially the left one and am tired of pain pills to walk. I see my orthopedic doctor Thursday to make sure the pill did no permanent damage. One pill and in hours I went from a pretty self sufficient and healthy 61 year old to a near invalid.I will never take another Fosamax and would encourage everyone to never take it. It should be off the market.Read More Read Less

This is the worst thing that has ever happened to me due to taking one tablet of Fosa Max. Took the first tablet on Monday morning and the pain started the next morning. It has been three weeks now and am still in extreme bone and muscle pain. After reading other horror stories I see I am not alone and this makes me very sad. I donâ??t know now if I will ever feel normal again because living with this pain is ruing my life. This drug needs to be banned and I will suggest to my doctor to never put another patient through this or tell them the possible side effects and let them decide. I did ask the doctor what kind of side effects I might get from this drug and was told only some slight indigestion. HA! that I could of handled.Read More Read Less

I took my first dose of Fosomax two days ago. The first day I felt fine. The next morning I awoke with severe stiffness in my neck and upper back. I could not turn my head. Iâ??ve never felt anything like this. It kept getting worse. I took ibuprofen. No help. Iced. Nothing. Heat pad. Nothing. Took another ibuprofen. Slight relief. Lying down Iâ??m fine. Getting up is difficult. The pain is still there but in addition itâ??s in my breast and under my arm. One pill! Iâ??ve contacted my doctors. Still waiting to hear back but after reading this blog Iâ??m stopping and looking for alternative methods. I didnâ??t know the manufacturer lost a big lawsuit against this drug. Read More Read Less

I was on Fosamax for 9 years (until I "timed out") and never had any problems or side effects. I never had any dental issues, either. If I had, I would have stopped the medication immediately. Fosamax actually increased my bone mass for which I am very grateful.

I had been on this medication for a year and a half. I started having leg aches and couldn't sleep on my right side. Ibuprofen did not help. When the pain continued, I thought of the Fosomax and checked side effects. I decided to stop the drug. Three days after missing that dose, my left leg became really painful, the hamstring and behind my knee. I could barely manages stairs. That gradually got better after much stretching and gentle use. I'm hoping that I get no more effects and I will not continue with the drug. My advice in general to women is to manage your own health by reading reputable online sites. Do not wait for your doctor to evaluate. You should pay attention to your own body. I have had similar trouble with my thyroid medication. I know better than the doctor when I need more or less because I can feel the effects before the blood test confirms. Read More Read Less

I took the first Fosamax tablet this week on Tuesday morning following the directions to a T. Felt fine until Weds. evening when palpitations started. Couldn't sleep, had diarrhea, was awake the entire night. Thursday the diarrhea continued and I started having pain in my left hip, which I have never had before. As the pain progressed it really hurt to walk and put all my weight on that leg. Today is Friday and the hip pain is still there although not as bad. I will not be taking a second pill and will tell everyone I know that this medication is not fit for human comsumption! I wish I had read the reviews on this website before I just blindly accepted what my doctor recommended - lesson learned. From now on I will do my own research before I take a new drug.Read More Read Less

I am posting a review again at day 28 after taking one (1) Fosamax pill. The stabbing pains in my foot and knee are intense and have not subsided. My bones and joints ache like I've never felt before. I see my Dr tomorrow to determine what damage this pill has caused to my bones and joints and my body in general. I beg you not to take this pill. I am a very healthy 59 yr old woman who is extremely active. I can barely put weight on my R knee and L foot when I get out of bed. I have never experienced pain like this in my life as a result of taking 1 pill. It is a poison and should be banned. Report effects to to the FDA immediately. This should not be prescribed. Read all reviews and research this drug before you agree to take it. I regret taking it and hope that the pain and discomfort will eventually subside. The pill stays in your system indefinitely. It can break down calcium rapidly causing calcium crystals to form around your joints which causes the debilitating pain. Please do your research. Thank you. Read More Read Less

I reviewed this horrible drug recently on Webmd and am now posting the fact that it's been 17 days since I took one (1) Fosamax pill and I am still experiencing intense bone pain in my right knee and left foot. There is hard swelling in my foot as if bone grew in one spot overnight. Every step I take is painful. Ibuprofen does not dull the pain. The pain has not diminished in 17 days. DO NOT TAKE THIS DRUG. IT SHOULD BE BANNED WORLD WIDE. Report side effects to the FDA immediately on their website. My active lifestyle has been altered by one pill. This is a nightmare. I will update this post again. Please don't take this pill. Side effects are life changing. I can barely walk my dog around the block now without experiencing sharp pains with every step I take. Read More Read Less

I'm a 59 yr old female. After taking the first (and only) Fosamax pill I got intense bone pain in my right knee the following day. Two days after my left foot had stabbing pains when I walked. Now, every step I take is incredibly painful now. I walk 4 miles a day and all of a sudden the day after taking the first Fosamax pill I could barely walk. Getting out of bed in the morning is extremely painful. I don't understand why a medication that is supposed to help bone growth instead causes intense bone pain. I am praying that the pain will go away. DON'T TAKE THIS PILL. I only took 1 and am suffering with intense pain. I'm a skier and am so concerned that this pill has already altered my active lifestyle. DON'T TAKE FOSOMAX! Read More Read Less

I took this drug once, five days later I ended up in the emergency room with severe abdominal pain. On a scale of 1-10 I was a 10+ every test that was performed came back negative. even morphine did not help me at first. I was eventfully admitted to the hospital while being pumped full of morphine to ease the pain. Oh I forgot to mentioned my blood pressure was 227/117 in the ER that's how bad the pain was. I have never experience pain like that before. I feel fine now but I will never take that drug again. I will be taking Vitamin D , Calcium and Natural Sunlight.Read More Read Less

I lead a healthy, active life and have lots of energy, but decided that since my bone density was at -2.5 and I'm small (5'4" and 92lbs) perhaps I should inquire about a bone building medication. I was prescribed Alendronate. That was a huge mistake! I took one pill exactly as directed. By mid-afternoon I was extremely tired. By evening I had excruciating back pain. Sleeping was impossible and the next morning I had difficulty walking because of the pain, which radiated to my knee on my right side. I also experienced slight dizziness, headache, and could barely keep my eyes open. The following day the pain was still very prevalent in my back, hip and leg and I had difficulty walking. I will never take another one of these pills. I wasted my money, and several days of my life in the hopes of preventing future fractures. Now I'm going to use my brain and not take unnecessary preventative drugs if I'm feeling fine. The aging process is not reversible, so let's embrace it, use common sense about diet and exercise and I would implore people not to try this drug! Also, I would recommend others to read "the myth about osteoporosis". I found it quite enlightening. Read More Read Less

I tried this drug twice for osteopenia due to prostate cancer hormone therapy. In both attempts to use Fosamax I experienced severe pain in my hips and shoulders after only two pills. On th second attempt after the first pill I also had severe esophagus and upper abdominal pain to the point that I could no longer swallow food. Went on a liquid diet for 10 days, then a soft food diet for a week befor I could eat solid food with just a little pain. The bone and joint pain made it difficult to get out of bed and I couldnâ??t get my arms high enough to drive a car. Very bad drug.Read More Read Less

Horrible side effects. 1 day after taking first pill, every joint in body ached. Could hardly walk up flight of stairs. Slight fever. Symptoms decreased over 3 days. After taking it the 2nd week. Within an hour half hives. The next day had aches again, swollen joints, fever of 100.2. Dr. Said take no more
