I began Fosamax in 2005 with a diagnosis of severe osteoporosis of -3.8 at age 53. In 2011,my dexa scan was still-3.3, but I had no fractures. A random Vitamin D blood test showed I was severely deficient of vitamin D. I was put on 4000iu of vitamin D3 daily. My memory improved, my bone pain resolved, foot pain resolved, my vision improved, and urinary incontinence resolved, my diabetes improved! ...

No problem taking this medication. It is easy to swallow and only have to wait 15 minutes before having anything to eat or drink after taking the medications

Five days after starting this drug, I awoke to the worse muscle joint pain I have ever encountered. From fingers to toes...all joints affected. Have been told by Rheumatologist NEVER to use this or a similar drug again. I was never told this was a side effect.

I only took 6 pills (once a week) and started having severe muscle/joint pain in my shoulders, neck, hips and low back. Severe stomach distress - gas, bloating, constipation, gurgling sounds. I just happened to go look up side effects on this medication and found that I was not crazy but many people have the muscle/joint pain. It was so severe I could hardly get out of the bed, or turn over in the bed, raise my arms or stand up straight. I went to my Dr. and told him the symtoms and told him I felt it was from the Fosamax so he let me get off of it and will look at lab work in another month or so and will decide on an alternative medication to take. I am scared to take anything now. I have been off medication for 2 weeks and still have pains, trouble raising my arm over my head etc. but my stomach has settled down and the pain has significantly decreased.Read More Read Less

I now am only 43 yrs old and aleady have osteopenia.I am pre menopause. Have family history of osteoporosis. Have just recently started taking FOSOMAX (2 wks) so i'm not sure yet on its effectiveness. I hope to see change soon. So far only problem is body aches for about 24 hrs after taking the pill. Hopefully that will go away after my body gets adjusted to the meds.

BONE DEATH OF THE JAW, AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST WOKE UP ONE MORNING TO FIND MYSELF COMPLETELY PARALYZED FROM NECK DOWN AND COULD NOT GET OUT OF BED. WOUND UP IN EMERGENCY AGAIN WITH FACIAL PAIN , AND PAIN FROM HEAD TO TO TO THIS DAY DOCTOR DIDN'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO ME WAS LEFT WEARING A HALTER FOR TWO WEEKS UPPER BODY PAIN STILL EXISTED UNTIL i DISCONTINUED .This drug almost killed me. I never had a clue about it. Never heard about it having any danger aspects to the health. I am fifty one years old took such a toll on my life, nothing is the same for me as it was the year before I started this medication . I beg all women dont take it or tell anyone you know not to as well. Can and almost surely will ruin your quality of life, It did for me.Cant do any of the things I used to. The above symptoms aren't the only ones that I've experienced, just had so many cant remember them all by now. Read More Read Less

After about 3 months on this medication experienced SEVERE joint pain. Couldn't even bend over to put leash on the dog. This is the only med I take, so stopped it. Took about two months to return to exercise and feeling "normal" again. This side effect is listed in very small print. Recommend reading "The Myth of Osteoporosis" by Gillian Sanson. Medication is not the answer for osteoporosis.

Since taking Fosamax I have noticed a slight congestion in my sinuses and throat. I have heard this can be caused by the medication. Is this true>

It's too easy to forget by taking it only once a week. All that mess about not eating or lying down for "30 minutes, preferably 1 to 2 hours" after taking it means that if you forget and drink coffee and take other meds, you have to put off taking it until the next day, when you might forget again. I liked Evista better. Take it once a day and forget it.

Please be aware of the unusual side effect of fosomax. Having been on if for three years and having some dental work done - I developed osteonecrosis of the jaw. Know one new about this serious side effect at the time 2003. I have been seen by 12 doctors/dentists and they just put me off. I finally had a consultation by a oral pathologist and he knew right away this was due to fosomax. Now, 2007, I found a treatment but insurance will not pay. I have no lower teeth and osteonecrosis because of this drug. Be aware there is a law suit against this drug company as more and more women are showing up with these horrifying symptoms. The drug should be taken off the market.AARP had an article in their news bulletin regarding this. Some dentists will not do dental work on women who are on fosomax. Some one out there "wake up".Read More Read Less
