I am 27, have never had children or been pregnant and have had my paragard for 4 months now. I took 2 ibprofen before insertion and while it was painful, the worst of the pain lasted for less than 10 seconds. I had some mild cramping the week after and my periods were back to normal after two cycles (the first two cycles were 1-2 days longer and more crampy than usual. my partner does not feel it ...

I had the copper IUD for 3 years and recently had it removed. For me, the IUD made my periods twice as heavy (to the point that it became very difficult to manage unless I was sitting at home) and my cramps were very bad (they took my breath away and happened for a full week before my period and during). This did not get any better for me over time, personally. I also fainted during insertion. I appreciated that it was hormone-free and it did not change my mood. Overall, I would never recommend but if you really are dead-set on birth control without hormones like I was, there aren’t really other options. Just be aware that for some people like myself, it turned a normal period that was uncomfortable and annoying into a 2-week struggle each month that I literally dreaded.Read More Read Less

I cannot speak for everyone, but I had a terrible experience with my Copper IUD. It lead to numerous food sensitivities, daily pain, intense brain fog, and 15 day long periods which were so heavy I could not leave my house. My body expelled it, but not all the way so I had to have it surgically removed. Many people will say it has no side effects, but everybody is different and all of my pain, food sensitivities, and brain fog went away as soon as it was out.

I wore a Paragard all together for 26 years. Worry-free and maintenance-free intercourse was splendid! If I were to go back on back on birth control, I'd have no reservation about going back to Paragard. But there were a few negatives. 1) the insertions were PAINFUL! But this pain quickly passed. 2) my first period after the first insertion lasted 10 days, and my flow was extremely heavy. Eventually, my periods would get down to 7 days, but would never return to 5 days until I had it removed. 3) My ex-husband was, shall we say, quite big! After insertions, he'd hit the strings when we had intercourse. We got around this by using spacer rings, to limit penetration, until I got back to my gynecologist several weeks later, so she should trim the strings.Up until last year, I was wondering if menopause was going to kick in before the next re-insertion, or if was going to have to endure yet another one. But my Coming-Out took care of that, which is also why I had my gynecologist remove it during my annual visit last year.Read More Read Less

I had the copper iud inserted march 23rd and the pain after 3 days were horrible.. they were worse than contractions. I tolerate pain very easily but those cramps I couldn’t tolerate so I got it taken out may 11 .. and since march 23 I’ve been non stop bleeding .. I only get a week off my period and I start back up again. So it’s really draining me out. Don’t get this birth control

I adore my copper IUD. I got it put in in the spring of 2017 (it’s now summer 2022) and I have no regrets. I have always had a long (~7 days) but light period with minimal/no cramping. After getting the copper IUD, I dealt with mild cramps for the first year but they eventually stopped. I never saw much of a difference with my flow, but I did permanently pick up one extra day of period (but honestly, going from 7 days to 8 days is not materially different since my flow is so chill and it ends up being like one extra day of a panty liner). The insertion sucked, but it’s quick and nothing some ibuprofen can’t knock out. I also struggled with recurring yeast infections prior to getting my IUD and I was worried they would increase in frequency since I read that some women had that experience after getting theirs inserted. My yeast infections still happened but did not become more frequent, and then I discovered OTC boric acid suppositories and I haven’t had a yeast infection since (seriously, miracle workers). I remember being very worried about my decision to get the Paragard and reading tons of reviews. There are a lot of scary reviews out there, but if you’re a good candidate for this IUD I can’t recommend giving it a try. As someone who struggled with the side effects of hormonal birth control, I feel strongly that the side effects from the copper IUD are way better (for me) than the side effects from the others. And bonus: I don’t have to take it out for like 14 years. Read More Read Less

I just received paraguard this morning and my review Is for insertion. It was not as bad as I have read. A mild to moderate cramp and it was over. On scale of 1-10 I’d say a 2/3. It was not bad at all. I would note that I took 3 aleve 1 hr before appointment and was on my period. I have 1 child age 22. I will give another review as time goes on how I like it. But so far so good. I have mild cramping since this morning. Nothing major

Got the paragard put in 7 months ago. After reading reviews i was questioning if i should or not. Insertion was painful as expected, my periods were heavier for the first 2 months & a little irregular in frequency. Overall im very happy with it. The pill messed up my natural hormones horrifically & i had been prescribed hormone creams to use every day to combat the negative affects from it. My period has been pretty normal, mentally i feel great, & my hormones are naturally balanced again. Im very happy i made the choice to go through with it. Read More Read Less

Getting the copper IUD put in was HORRIBLE. Got in it October 2021. They say just a little bit of pain, a pinch, etc but they are very wrong. I have a pretty high pain tolerance, but that was absolutely awful. The terrible cramps continued into the next few days, slowly getting not as bad. Periods have been VERY heavy since. Like bleed through maxi pad and super tampon in an hour or 2. Cramping each month, some months worse than others but always can put up with it. Altogether, I do not think it is worth it and will most likely get it taken out next month. Read More Read Less

After reading the reviews I decided to side with the positive reviews vs the negative reviews and let me tell you I regret it and hate myself so much for it right now. This copper iud is the worst thing ever. So terrible that I had to come back here to leave my experience. Now I got this inserted on April 2nd. The insertion process wasnt painful, just extremely uncomfortable and like the other girls say it feels like an extended pap smear. I had no cramping or bleeding for that first week. But today is May 4th and I have been bleeding literally EVERYDAY NONSTOP since April 8th. I tried having sex with it and it was terrible. I could feel the device pushing against my uterine wall the entire time. Ive been having migraines every other day and I've never had an issue with headaches. So the bad sex, nonstop bleeding, and headaches is enough for me to say f* this. Im trying to wait until I finally stop bleeding to have it removed. I'd rather have another baby than to put up with this. Read More Read Less

The IUD only stayed in for about a month and a half, I went with it because I wanted a non hormonal BC, I always had very regular and light periods, my first period after was HORRIBLE, it was strange, I had no cramping or period symptoms but I was passing clots and soaking threw tampons and pads in an hour, my husband and I had sex for the first time since getting it and it fully came out, it was my ovulation day so I had to go buy plan b and hope I’m not pregnant now. I went threw most of these reviews before I got it and still got it, that’s why I’m leaving my review… please consider a different method… I didn’t think I could bleed so much… Read More Read Less

I’ve had my IUD for 8 months now, and my experience has been great! It was a little painful getting it inserted, I would recommend taking some ibuprofen before your appointment! Other than that, my experience has been as expected. My periods are heavier, and tad more painful, but those are things I expected when getting of this type of BC. I love how low maintenance it is, my partner has no complaints, and I honestly don’t mind continuing to have my periods..

These are horrible. Please do your research and do not get these implanted. Copper toxicity is real. So was my constant pain, painful sex, horrible PMS and cramping the entire time.

Had my paragard in for a year and a half. My gyn suggested removing this and getting a new one inserted so here goes nothing. I had it removed due to constant cramping and pain during sex. My doctor explained the cramping should only last as long as 4 months and it lasted the entire time almost all the time. I eventually just got used to constantly having cramps. As most of the other reviews say it is not an easy insertion. It hurts going in and coming out but nothing tylenol and breathing cant fix also its typically quick. I did not notice any weight gain, decrease sex drive, anxiety, or acne. Other than the cramping and pain during sex half the time my body seemed to have stayed the same. Worst case you just get it removed after a couple months! Read More Read Less

I wanted to share a review on this because i came online when i was considering it to get other peoples opinions and it was a huge put off! Remember it is more common for people to share negative opinions that positive ones. If it works you just carry on your life and forget about it. I took the step after a slip up on my pills that left me stressed out. I wanted a non hormonal option because i felt i had enough of hormones and pills after being on the pill for over 5 years. I love it so far! The procedure itself is a little saw, i was more feeling embarrassed than anything but the doctor was so professional and lovely, remember it is their job. It did hurt a little but maybe like a small period cramp nothing major and i didn't bleed after or during the procedure. I did however get period cramps that evening quite badly but they passed and by the morning i felt fine. My periods are a little heavier but generally no different and no longer, i know everyone is different but it honestly hasn't been a problem. The thing is if your considering it ignore the embarrassment or going, at the end of the day it is their job. It may hurt a little but be prepared for that, the chances are like the majority of people you will be fine and it will not hurt too much. The doctor actually told me it's pretty rare for people to be in really bad pain from this. I would highly recomend.Read More Read Less

I decided to get IUD to have a reliable birth control and not to worry about getting pregnant. But if you are not having sex because you always in pain and rest of the time having your period or spotting and have no desire of course you are not gona get pregnant. After having it 5 months I decided to remove it because of horrible side effects i experienced. Besides very heavy periods, random contraction pains , back pain i started to have severe anxiety, depression and migraines on daily basis. My body was rejecting copper IUD and i didnt realize it , i wish i could remove it earlier so I wouldnt go to such a struggle. Maybe for some people it really works definitely not for me. Too many side effects. Read More Read Less

Horrible. Got this because I was excited for hormone free BC. Since I got it I’ve had debilitating back pain, hip pain, constant pelvic pressure and pinching and horrible cramps for over two months. I hate it and cannot wait to get it removed.

Got my Paragard IUD inserted back in October 2020. Insertion was tolerable. I unfortunately had to get it removed a few weeks later as it almost came out completely during my period. After I got a new one in place, i experienced only bad cramping for my first two menstrual cycles. I am extremely active so I deal with abdominal pain fairly well. The only reason I stopped wanting to use the IUD for good was for the heavy bleeding! I went from a 5 day period with only 2 days of heavy bleeding, to a 8-9 day period with 4-5 days of SUPER heavy bleeding!!! I knew this was possibility before getting it inserted, but thought it would subside within 4-6 months. It's going on 9 months and I still go through menstrual diapers, maxi pads and maxi tampons. I am only 19 and don't plan on having kids, so I don't see a reason why I need to have a period. I got it removed today which was painless and have started a combination pill that will clear my acne and stop my period all together. Other than that I did not experience any bad side effects as there are no hormones in it, but I strongly do not recommended this pill to anyone who lives an active lifestyle and doesn't want a heavy period to get in the way of their daily life!Read More Read Less
