I am 27, have never had children or been pregnant and have had my paragard for 4 months now. I took 2 ibprofen before insertion and while it was painful, the worst of the pain lasted for less than 10 seconds. I had some mild cramping the week after and my periods were back to normal after two cycles (the first two cycles were 1-2 days longer and more crampy than usual. my partner does not feel it ...

I honestly don't know what to do about this thing. I have a mood disorder, which makes using hormonal bc a no-go for me. Mirena made me flip out, so I got this inserted instead. My doctor couldn't even get it in, after dilating me 8cm and trying to stab it in for 10 minutes, which REALLY freaking hurt. She then scheduled me to have it surgically inserted. That was 5 months ago, and I now have some sort of period/discharge/PMS symptoms for three out of four weeks every month. My abdomen stays bloated and uncomfortable (stabbing cramps at any given moment), it hurts doing pretty much anything, the bleeding is more severe than I have ever experienced in my life, and there are only a few days a month where I have NO period or PMS symptoms at all. I go through tampons like nobody's business, I'm tired all the time, and my body just hates this thing. I have nearly exhausted my bc options at this point. I have had THREE follow up appointments to see if it's turned or otherwise placed wrong, and they keep telling me no, this is normal for the first several months, just stick with it and it will even out. But how long? A year? After a year if things are still this way, I guess I'll have no choice but to have it removed. Read More Read Less

Getting the Paragard IUD inserted was the most painful thing I've ever experienced, while it was in my uterus I experienced the worst cramping and pain - worse than my worst period. The pain was so bad, my legs and back seized up and I had the IUD removed on the 6th day of having it inserted. Afterwards, I bled heavily and had terrible cramps for 5 days and it has not stopped since. This has been the most awful experience, I wouldn't recommend Paragard to anyone.

Day of insertion was a breeze. Bled the next day. It was a normal amount of blood, but was off and on for two weeks. It's been about a month with no bleeding at all. I could feel the IUD for the first week. like I had to sit down easily or else I'd accidentally move its position. After a week I havent felt it at all. I've also had intercourse without any problems. No cramping or bleeding afterwards. Today I started cramping, but nothing intense. It's a continuous cramp. Been going on for a couple hours. Also nothing to complain about in my opinion. But all these negative reviews have said that they would compare the cramps to child birth and I STRONGLY disagree. I've had way worse cramps than this, and wouldn't even imagine comparing those to child birth lol. Now, I was on the hormonal implanon before this. And I loved it! Now that I'm off the implanon, and on a non hormonal, I've noticed some awesome changes in my body. Before (while on implanon) i had issues keeping my ph balanced. I needed to take strong antidepressants to help with my crazy irritability, mood swings and anxiety. My mind was all kinds of messed up, along with my body. So, with paragard, I've lost some weight which is always a plus lol. My ph is finally back to normal. Im not getting any infections. I weaned myself off my antidepressants and haven't noticed mood swings, irritability or anxiety. I SMELL THINGS DIFFERENTLY. I'm attracted to different guys lol. It's a slow process but it's amazing how I feel now, compared to when I was on hormonal birth control. It's been a very long time, 13 years to be exact. If paragard may not be for you, I strongly suggest getting off the hormonal kinds. It's been an amazing transition so far and it can only get better. Also, I included a link about how attraction can change while taking hormonal bc:) https://naturalwomanhood.org/how-the-birth-control-pill-messes-up-mutual-attraction/ CHEERS TO NO crazy horomones!!????Read More Read Less

I got Paragard inserted while I was on my period and it was quick and only slightly uncomfortable. A month later, I got my period again and I bled for a week. I normally only bleed for 3-5 days. I stopped bleeding for 3 days and then started bleeding again. I ended up bleeding for a whole month before I got my doctor agree to remove it. I did not spot but was full on bleeding using pads and tampons. I switched to a hormonal IUD and my bleeding instantly slowed to spotting upon insertion even though I was still bleeding from the copper IUD. 2 days after getting the hormonal IUD, my spotting has stopped and I am currently NOT on my period after an awful month!Read More Read Less

I got ParaGard inserted near the end of December 2017. The mini pill had caused me to spot constantly and was the cause of reoccurring YIs and BV. I tried a combination pill and my anxiety shot through the roof. I decided to go hormone free. The insertion was fast. I've never had my cervix dilated before, so it was a pretty intense few seconds. Mild cramping for a week or two after. When I got to my first period, the cramps sucked. I bought my first heating pad and my SO listened to me use controled breathing through the waves of pain. My second month was equally brutal. I almost threw up from the cramps and spent a full day in bed and was bleeding through regular tampons every half hour. BUT the third month was normal. One heavy day, a few medium days and one or two light spotting days. And the cramps were tolerable and manageable. No BV, No YIs, No babies. I know everyone has their own experience, but don't let the negative reviews scare you away. If you can grit your teeth through the first few months, it's totally worth it, in my humble opinionRead More Read Less

I got my Paragard IUD placed in June of 2016. On September 19, 2016, I found out I was pregnant. Would not recommend this IUD to anyone wanting effective birth control.

I got my Paraguard inserted on Dec 22,2017 after being on birth control pills for 5 years, I had read the good and the bad reviews and although I was scared to getting it since I have never had any kids I got in anyway. Went to my appointment expecting to be in a lot of pain, getting it inserted was honestly very uncomfortable but I took it and after was cramping a bit on and off and began to spot. To not make this story longer than what it is I pretty much started to bleed heavy for 15 days which was apparently normal according to the nurses and now it has completely stopped along with the cramps. I am super happy about not bleeding and I have high hopes in this working for me and my partner. Will try and update soon!Read More Read Less

I really wanted to like this form of birth control. ParaGard is the only non-hormonal IUD available which is the reason why I chose it. However, my entire experience using it was terrible. It caused a lot of other bodily issues that were just unbearable to the point where I had to have it removed. The cramps every month were 10 times worse than when I wasn't even on birth control. Sex was painful, although 2 gynecologists insisted that it was inserted correctly and I did not have any cysts. After a while, it just felt strange having some foreign device inside me. Also my skin is so much nicer when I'm on the pill. I would not recommend this option for birth control. Read More Read Less

When i first started my period I was 14. I had heavy periods with intense cramping for 6-7 days. At 27 i decided paragard was right for me. No hormones really sold it for me. I had it in for two years. Two full years of HEAVY periods and the most painful cramps i experienced. I took aleve EVERYDAY i was on my period. I wore a super tampon and pad and would still leak thru. I couldnt go longer then 4 hours without changing both. I was pretty miserable but stuck with it. With all that being sad i STILL became pregnant. Yes, pregnant on the paragard! Docs took it out and after that roller coaster of emotions from pure shock to excitment and joy, sadly i lost the pregnancy. I was deeply saddened by my whole experience. Looking back, I should have taken it out after a year and tried something different on the simple fact of intense pain and discomfort i experienced. I know my case is a very small percent but it happens. I honestly wouldn't recommend this to my sisters or friends because of my personal experience. Its not worth the risks. I also dont want you to feel discouraged because of my experience because everyone's is different. But i am just an average person and never thought that i would be this kind of statistic. Do your research and if something doesnt feel right, listen to your instincts. It could potentially save you a lot of grief. Read More Read Less

I'm happy with this. Insertion was BAD. And the periods remain heavy (though not as heavy as the first few months). But I really appreciate having normal hormonal fluctuations.

I've had the IUD for 9 months and I am SO ready to part ways. I was told it would get better after 6 months, but I've seen no improvement over time. It's an effective form of non-hormonal birth control, however it's not without side effects! Prior to the ParaGard, I had no cramps and light periods (~4 days). With the IUD, it lasts 10-14 days long. I'm comfortable for 1 week out of every month, then the cramps start about a week before my period. When I say cramps, I mean CRAMPS. I actually have to take sick days from work. It has a huge negative impact on my lifestyle. My period starts a week later with spotting and rather gross looking discharge. That lasts about 5 days, then the full period starts. It's more blood loss than I ever imagined. I bleed ~2 oz of blood within 4 hours on day one. That's more blood in 4 hours than most woman lose during the entire week of their period. My solutions have been iron supplements, any pain killer I can get my hands on, long baths, heating pad and the Diva Cup and Thinx panties to deal with the shear amount of blood loss. Seriously, forget tampons unless you can change a super plus every 30 minutes through the day. Also, I feel like I have constant inflamation in my body, leaving me with reduced energy and weight gain. I've gained 45 pounds since getting the IUD because I'm in too much pain and distress to exercise and I also feel constantly fatigued. I've become extremely moody and it's been causing relationship problems as well. I seem to have way less sex because there is only about 1 week per month were I feel okay. I would strongly discourage any woman from trying this birth control. Consider the new birth control app called natural cycles. Read More Read Less

Where do I even begin!I opted for the Paragard IUD bc I wanted to try a non hormonal based birth control. The insertion was a bit painful and I had major cramping the night of. But afterwards I felt fine. Until about 2 weeks after having it inserted. My periods were awful! Extremely heavy and painful. Then, about a month in, the hair loss started. I began losing hair by the HANDFULS in the shower. I tried to not worry and see if it would correct itself. Until I started noticing visible bding spots in my hair! I have NEVER had an issue with thin hair/hair loss. I have always had very thick, long, curly hair. I began reading reviews from other Paragard victims and am now convinced that is the reason for my hair loss. I had it removed almost a week ago and am taking a ton of vitamins praying my hair begins to grow back! I also had blood work done to insure I had no other medical conditions that could be causing the hair loss. All came back normal. I REGRET EVER GETTING THAT CURSED IUD!!!Read More Read Less

I love paragard. When it was inserted it only felt like a pinch. I've had this going on 5 months now and it has been very effective. The only thing I hate is the heavy periods. I've never used birth control before but my periods are normally 3-4 days and not heavy at all. So I'm still trying to get use to it. But other than that it's perfect.

Hi there, I also wanted to write a positive review. The first few days of having the Copper IUD was difficult. IBprofin became my best friend. I was bloated and swollen in my abdomen area for the first week but after that everything was fine. I did experience my first period recently and honestly it wasn't that bad. My period before the IUD lasted about 5 days with medium flow. Once I got the IUD and on my next period, it was light the first two days with cramping 2 days before and about 3-4 days during my period. On the 3rd and 4th day of my period, it was pretty heavy heavy but after that went back to a normal flow. Definitely advise to have super size tampons if your getting the copper IUD. Honestly I'm fine with my period and was expecting it to be heavier, nice thing the heavy flow didn't last that long. In total my period was about 7 days. I think I'll get use to it. I'm really happy with it and haven't experienced any other side effects since my period ended... no spotting, nothing :-)Read More Read Less

I just got my IUD put in today and I'm obsessed! It hurt for like 5 minutes during the insertion, I felt slight cramping for half an hour after, but all discomfort went away slightly after. It's so convenient - I don't have to think about birth control for the next 7 years. For a max 1 hour of pain I'd say that's totally worth it. Just wanted to share my initial experience.

I've had the copper IUD ParaGard for almost 3 years now, but I plan to have it removed soon. I'm finally giving in to the pain and discomfort! I wanted to love this device and it was extremely effective (no pregnancies or medical complications). It seems that many other women love it too and have little to no discomfort over time. I've had mine checked multiple times and it's placed correctly, but the pain is just too much for me at this point. I went through phases where I finally thought it was getting better only to be disappointed again and again.Read More Read Less

The insertion for me was unbelievably painful! I am 23 y.o w/ no kids and already heavy cycle to start. I have many tattoos so I can take the pain but I am glad that the insertion is over with and the sucker is already in. The cramps on the first day were excruciating, but came and gone! I can't have any hormonal BC any more due to migraines with aura and possibility of stroke with use. I got this IUD inserted the first day of my period and took 3 advils before which didnt help the process at all and not to mention my OB cut the 1 string too short so I will only feel 1 instead of 2. It is now day 3 and I couldn't be happier with my decision. All pain and cramping went away and my period has increased it stayed the same. Will continue to see how this goes!Read More Read Less
