I write this with the intention to share my experiences with the highly potent and very addictive medication, Fentanyl. I myself use the Duragesic Patches (by Janssen), I have found through trail and error that the patches Fentanyl (the Generic brands by other companies just don't have the same Strength or potency as this brand name I use). I have unfortunately been on the patches for what seems l...

I've been on the Patch for over 10 yrs. I had a bad auto accident & have multiple issues. I use the Brand Name Duragesic Patch & trust me, this does work the BEST (but it's very expensive.) Approx. 6 months ago, the Brand Name was not available for about a month, so, I was forced to use one of the generic's. I can tell you, the generic patch made by Mylan stinks!!! The pain relief was so much less from the Mylan Patch, I felt like I had 1/2 my dose on (If you go to the website, you'll see it's a common complaint)!!If you MUST use one of the generic patches due to cost or Ins. coverage, the generic Patch made by Sandoz offers MUCH BETTER pain relief!! Hope this helps!! Read More Read Less

I began on fentanyl in 2005 and have been on it since (Aug 2011 now) through 4 surgeries and countless other drug cocktails, this has been the one that has worked consistently. I had a hard start with this medication, as I was absorbing it to quickly, I started to go through withdrawals after 48 hours, not 72. There is not enough studies out there that have been done on fast absorption, so it was a difficult process to have my doctor understand and change it. I went all the way up to 150 mcg, now I am down to 25 and hoping to be off next month. For those who need it, it is a life saver. I have never fully gotten out of pain, but it helped to take the edge off. There are side effects memory problems, lapse of concentration, profuse sweating, and migraines. If you need to be on this medication, I feel for you because I know how much pain you must be in. As long as you follow the instructions and don't over do it you'll be fine. last suggestion would be to ask your doctor for tegaderm patches by 3M, my patches would fall off until I started using these.Read More Read Less

I've been on this pain patch fo over 5 years. Started with 25mcg, and now i'm up to 75mcg. However, i get two rx's a 25 & a 50. I cannot put a 75mcg on, because i get very nauseated. So i start with a 50 then the next day i add the 25mcg. I have to change them every 48 hrs. I do worry about being physically addicted to this medicine, but i can't get out of bed without it. I do recommend this medicine for those that can't find relief with pills. This medicine is safe as long as you don't alter it or abuse it. The only way i can get these to stay on is with 3m tegaderm film. I hope this helps.add the 25mcg. I have to change them every 48 hrs. I had an accident in 2002 and have been on the patch ever since. I was on 100mcg and wanted to go down myself.I went to 50mcg and then my doc got upset with me b/c he wanted me to go back up and kicked me out of his clinic. He gave me 15 patches which were 12mcg. I have never been so sick in my life. didn't sleep for 5 days I was seeing things that were not there and I couldnt keep still. my body was hurting all over and it felt like bugs crawling under my skin! it was awful! I think this drug should be bannned unless you are terminally ill. my PCP gave me blood pressure pills which helped some with the terrible withdrawals. It was PURE hell! I'm happy to say I have been off the path for 14 days and I'm doing great now. I will NEVER get back on it unless I'm dying. PLEAE hear my warning.... this is a serious drug and there are other drugs that can help that are not as addictive as this. I'm a nurse and I never knew how bad this medicine was. It is 100 times stronger than morphine and ppl describe getting off it like getting off heroine. please listen to me..... blessings CarrieRead More Read Less

I am writing only to address the difficulty of keeping the patches on. I don't use Duragesic but I have used other transdermal medications and have found that NEXCARE Cloth Adhesive Tape (1" width) will keep the patches on for as long as needed. Other brands, like Bandaid, don't work. I make a rectangular box around the circular path, holding down the edges of the patch adhesive. Hope this helps.

My biggest complaint is that I have a hard time with the patch staying on my skin - it is either too dry in the winter or I sweat too much in the heat. I finally started using a very expensive product called Tegaderm Film, which is used in hospitals to keep iv's in place. (Not covered for these under Disability, but I need them - I tried every kind of tape in the pharmacy and nothing works like Tegaderm Film) Even though I am taking 175 mcgs every 3 days, I still need to take oral medication for breakthrough pain. I've been on this dose for just over one year and find that it really doesn't last 3 days - it's more like 48 hours. But the relief it has brought me is wonderful compared to everything that I have tried in the past. I don't know what kind of life I would have if my new Doctor had not suggested this medication. I was diagnosed with 2 herniated discs with bilateral siatica and degeneritive disc disease.I have been prescribed many different narcotic, non narcotic and anti inflamitory meds with poor results. Oxycodone worked well but the dose needed made my Doctor uncomfortable, so we tried Duragesic. The Duragesic worked well accept the patch some times comes off due to persperation or showering. Duragesic is very easy to use, each patch lasts 72 hours. Be aware though certain generic brands are not as effective and dont last the 72 hours that they promise. Also the medication is very expensive out of pocket. Overall I am very happy and would recomend it to anyone that would need constant pain relief.Read More Read Less

I have MS and RA, with some other issues. Occasionally i have memory problems and take take alot of other meds to help with my conditions. The patch has changed multiple things for me as in not having to remember dosing for pain levels, not having added medications to take, etc. The patch has changed my activity level, my ability to do more with my children and grandchild. Work in my garden and on my yard. It is amazing due to the fact I am 41 years old. I would reccomend this medication as prescribed to anyone who wants to remain active.Read More Read Less

After two surgeries, I now have FBSS, or Failed Back Surgery Syndrome. Additional surgeries are not going to happen! I am waiting for a Spinal Cord Stimulator and while waiting I am using the 25mcg patch. The pain will come through it at times and I need Norco 325/10 to handle it. I don't want to ask for a higher strength as I'm hoping for an early fix with the Stimulator. The patch has never come off and I switch upper arms for the location. I had 1 time red skin at patch site. I've had the usual constipation side effect plus some mild hallucinations/hyper activity. Don't even think about driving while using this drug! I have had several disc replacements and have still more prolapsed, torn discs so get severe pain. I didn't really want to go on the patch in the first place as it doesn't give you the power to reduce if you don't need as much pain relief or up it if you need more. I have now found that within a few months my body has got use to it and it is only effective on day one but on that day it releases way too much as I am awake until the second night. the second day I need to take other pain relief to top it up and on the third day I might as well not be wearing it at all as I need to take alot of other pain relief. I have on numerous occassions found the patch floating round the bath after bathing. I was hoping to resume swimming if I was given effetive pain relief after attending a pain clini but I certainly don't think this patch system would be upto the job unless I got other plasters to put over the top! Also having back pain I have a heat pad & electric blanket as they really help but now have to be very care full where I put the patches as it warns you about using these as the patches release to much if they get hot so they are not very user friendly.Read More Read Less

The Duragesic patch was my answer to dealing with exquisite pain associated with 2 failed spinal surgeries. However places to stick the patch are limited ESP if one lives alone, because I believe the back is the best place and placing it there yourself is impossible. Also keeping the patch in place was initially a concern even using surgical tape, but the drug company now provides Bioclusive Dressing free of charge and that has solved the problem. My only concern is that now I have been using it for so long about 15 years it's efficacy seems to be waning, yet I have no other alternative but to supplement the patch with oral opioids. I was hoping this would not occur.Read More Read Less
