This medication is *HORRIBLE* The medication itself worked for my Simple Complex seizures. But the side effects are awful. I struggle with everything I do. I'm now transposeing numbers, my spelling is so bad, I'm walking into the corners of hallways, my coordination is off, I'm referring to people, objects by saying the wrong name, I'm studering, I keep falling. I'm covered in bruising because of ...

Has stopped the seizures (haven't had a full on seizure for 2 weeks) but still have auras, very dizzy, and have had two incidents where I see everything through an unusual colour (light blue the first time, pink the second). This lasts only a few minutes - once it was in the peripheral, second time was my entire vision.

My doc. started me on a low dose used for children and slowly had me go up in does of Vimpat while lowering my Dilantin. My seizers have been under control, my only side affect since I've been off Dilantine and on full 200mg of Vimpat twice a day is sensitivity to bright lights. Also as someone else commented the cost is so high. I hope it soon drops a bit.

I have been on Vimpat for the last year. It has controlled my seizures very well. I do experience side effects such as numbness mainly on my face and tongue and ringing and short term hearing loss especially a half hour or so after taking it. This usually lasts about a hour. I also have horrible memory loss and trouble verbalizing my thoughts at times. This can be very frustrating. I do not have any depression or mood swings. If anything I am really mellow. I was on depakote for Many many years and that was horrible so as long as my body can handle the medication I think it's worth it. Word of warning though you can not modify your dose on your own like the other drugs the results can be severe.Read More Read Less

1st made me fattest in my life, now I have to force myself to eat. Crying for no reason - 13 times in one day. Staggered down the street. Never had heartburn in 67 yrs. Popping tums and had to be put on (memory loss) med. for GI problems and constipated. Skin feels like it's crawling. I take it with primidone (30 yrs.) Stopped seizures for a record time - 1 year and 1 month, but they're back. SOB and tachycardia after minimal exercise. Feel like crap and look worse. Mood swings are awful. Dose was just decreased because of this. And have to go to GI clinic.Read More Read Less

I am 26 years old and was diagnosed with generalized epilepsy 2 years ago..VIMPAT has controlled my Grand Mals and other episodes. My dissatisfaction lies in the side effects of the drug. For me the main, and worse side effect is a crushing pit of despair, the word depression barley begins to scratch the surface of these feelings. I do now experience most emotions in this very intense fashion, since beginning VIMPAT one month ago. I will get VERY happy, or VERY sad, or VERY frustrated, but ALWAYS very forgetful. I also feel a serious loss of appetite, I have lost weight. Now the COST, at $500 a bottle it is exceedingly expensive, thats $6000 a year! I've never seen such a pricey drug, except for chemotherapeutic drugs. For the uninsured, best of luck.Read More Read Less

Does this medication cause a person to dispose an extensive more quantity of gas with any other certain foods especially cereal such as: Raisin Bran, Mayonnaise,Tea,Coffee...or any other substances in the breakfast, lunch & dinner field?

I'd been on so minimal an amount of Keppra for over a decade that my Dr insisted it wouldn't even register in my system (no more than 500mg/day) but was hit by a car in 2011 after which the simple & complex partials started back up w/a vengeance. I wanted off the Keppra despite my Dr's opinion as others, unaware of when I'd lowered & attempted to come off it, commented on how much more alive & positive I was at those times. Vimpat (Keppra's replacement for 2mo) initially stopped the complexes if not all of the simples/auras, but I also experienced great depression - the kind that has you seeing no light at the end of the tunnel & investigating ways to die. I didn't discuss this w my Dr, & essentially stopped the Vimpat out of depression - at which point the depression stopped. Other side-effects included terrible coordination, blurred vision, and itchy skin...none of which hold a candle to realizing I saw no purpose in going on while on the drug. At this time, as a post surgery/part of the 30% non-responsive historically to AEDs, I'm simply having the post concussion (hit by car) CPs with no drug intervention.Read More Read Less

The first week or two I was a little dizzy and my vision was slightly blurry. Now that I have been on Vimpat for awhile, the only side effect is slight drowsiness. It really does work for me in combination with another AED to control my seizures. The only thing I didn't like was that Vimpat is a class D for pregnancy and I had to stop taking it during that time. One more thing, Vimpat is very expensive. At first insurance didn't want to cover it until the doc tried other medications that didn't work. Without health insurance, it would be impossible to afford this medication.Read More Read Less

Our daughter is a 30 year old developmentally delayed adult. She has been on Lamotrigine, and Fluvoxamine for OCD, for years with reasonably good results. She would have some seizure activity, most notably around the time of her period. After an appointment with her neurologist, he suggested we could do better, and introduced Vimpat into her regiment of meds. After several weeks of tweeking the meds, we ended up with Lamotrigine 400 mg AM/PM, Fluvoxzmine 300 mg PM, and Vimpat 200 mg AM/PM. After introducing the Vimpat, Jenni experienced side effects that so closely mirrored her seizures that we could not decipher exactly what was happening. Was it a side effect or a seizure? We finally realized that the main difference in the side effects and a seizure was that her seizures would cause her speech to become very slurred, the only thing that the Vimpat did not do. The side effects were so severe, and included, blurred and double vision, a horrific coordination problem, one that left Jenni unable to walk, and the need to be in bed for 3-4 hours to recover from the side effects, and to be someplace safe. After that she would be good to go for the rest of the day. The problem is that Jenni volunteers M-F at a local Elementary School, but because of the side effects of Vimpat, she has been forced to give that up. I keep seeing reviews that say if you can get past the side effects (sometimes taking as long as 3 to 6 months) things will get better. I can't imagine making our daughter go through this nightmare any longer than is absolutely necessary. As of Sunday we reverted make to old medication dosage, and so far so good. We realize that nothing is perfect, but Vimpat was so IMPERFECT it was scary. User beware. Read More Read Less
