I have had two feraheme infusions, one week apart, due to anemia, which the drs are saying is from heavy periods... I had no bad side effects from the infusions at all... I started really feeling better around the end of week one. My hemoglobin was 8.6 before the infusions. I will update this to tell you what my hemoglobin is in 2 weeks. I had 2 injections in 2010 and haven't been the same since. I had severe episodes of flushing, muscle weakness and fatigue, confusion, "mind fog", memory issues, and many other symptoms as well.

I started really feeling better around the end of week one. My hemoglobin was 8.6 before the infusions. I will update this to tell you what my hemoglobin is in 2 weeks. I came to this forum before I got the infusions done and was really scared by what I read, so I thought it was important to add my good review. I had no bad effects, it went well during the infusion and after. For anyone going to have an infusion for the first time, be watchful for side effects during and after the infusion, but don't be afraid the nurse told me in her years of doing infusions she had never had a bad reaction and I can attest to being a good experience.. no bad reaction during nor bad side effects in the days after. I have been receiving IV iron infusions for several years with no problems and good results. My last 2 infusions were done using Feraheme. My iron count is good but I am EXTREMELY fatigued and need to sleep a lot. My doctor thinks I'm crazy but this is not the same effects I had from slow-drip iron IVs.

I had 2 infusion txs for iron def anemia and after first tx started to have a hive like rash on my forearms. I showed this to the tx RN who reported it would go away in about a week. Upon completion of my second tx (7 days s/p)I had hives bilaterally on my hands, forearms and up the front of my shins. It has taken alot of antihistamines and steriod cream to get this rash to go away. I have finally after 3 1/2 months begun to see the spots left from the hives begin to fade. I would never go thru this tx again, while it did work, the ugly rash I endured the summer with(rash very photo sensitive too)was not worth it!! Read More Read Less

I was prescribed a two-dose course. During what was to be my first dose, I had a swelling feeling in my throat and dizziness. The nurses monitoring me gave me a steroid infusion and kept me 3-4 hours for monitoring. When I called my doctor's office to see if I should pre-medicate with Benadryl, they told me there would be no second infusion. Apparently allergic reactions can be very severe even if you haven't had a reaction during previous infusions so my doctor said to make sure it's on my allergies list. That said, my follow-up showed my persistent anemia to be gone.Read More Read Less

I am on my second of four infusions and I have had the worst nausea, "swimmy" head and just all around aweful. My IV push only takes about 10 minutes and I was wondering if my side effects are because of how quickly they push it?? Really not looking forward to these each week.

I had my first dose of Feraheme this week and I ended up in ER from a severe allergic reaction, from burning sensations, itchiness, feeling out of sorts. The next day I was at my Specialist office with another allergic reaction from Feraheme. They have to canceled my second dose because of all the major side effects from this iron infusion.

I receive Feraheme for Anemia caused by a bleeding stomach. I have never had any side effects. It cuts down the need for so many blood transfusions. It works great for me.

I just had pretty much the exact same experience as the reviewer called "Colleen" who reivewed this drug in 2011. This was my third infusion with this drug. The first infusion caused a flush reaction in my upper body and a very heavy sensation in my chest. The second time I had the infusion the nurse added IV fluids and pushed the drug in much slower. I still had the heavy sensation in my chest but it subsided in about 10 minutes and I did not become flushed that time. The infusion I had today was nearly disasterous. Again, I had pretty much the same thing as Colleen and it was terrifying. The pain I had in my back was the worst thing I've ever felt. For sure a 10 of 10 in pain. Read More Read Less

I was severely anemic and could not take oral Iron. I did not have any issues with the IV or the drug. No pain, no side effects, no discomfort. For me it was well worth it.

After a year of ferritin below 6 and unbearable fatigue, a nephrologist recommended this drug. It has changed my life! I cannot believe how much better I feel after two doses. I can think faster and more clearly. My memory is improved and that horrible pulling sensation in my calves is gone. I have so much more energy. It's a shame that I didn't get this drug a couple of years ago, but it took getting referred to a nephrologist for me to even learn about Feraheme.

I had severe bone pain after or maybe a week into infusion.I have crohns . The oncologist said people usually do not have complaints of side effect. My comment was, most people here are cancer patients and they are on pain med or maybe they think it is due to cancer. I am an RN so I know a little, just enough to worry. However this iron works very fast. I had to stop it last time due to having a crohns flare , this can makes systems to.I would recommend that you would maximize your crohns medication to prevent a flare . Dr don,t like to give out pain med and drug company dose not like to admit any negative side effects. Read More Read Less

i was recieving this drug because I'm severely iron defecient and anemic. I had our infusion center look into this bor me. I cannot absorb oral iron. My nurse had me pretreat with 650 mg of tylenol. I had taken 40mg of predisone earlier in the day. She started to infuse the feraheme thru a butterlfy needle in my Right AC. She was doing a timed push. I started to get sweaty palm and my fingers turned red. Then there was pressure in my chest. She stopped the infusion. I was given 25mg of benedryl Ivp, 120mg of solumedron IVP, then famantoding. A lactaded ringers bolus was started. I had pain hit in my back and lower flanks that rated 10/10 the an excruciating headache that throbbed in conjunction with my back pain. I became tachycardic, hypertensive. I could not relieve the pain in my pack. Eventually it subsided. I had become flushed it was hard to catch my breath because of the svt. It was very scary. What are the long term effects of this drug? Read More Read Less

I was given Fereheme (4 doses now, over a 6 month period) for Iron Deficiency anemia. It caused chest pain that has continued for two weeks after the treatment. I am 50, female, otherwise healthy. The prior infusions caused discomfort, wet sensations in the lower legs and sacrum/surrounding area. I did better on the lower dose Iron Dextran administered over a longer period (2 months).

I only had swelling in my left leg and foot. Other than that I did not have any reactions. It a lot easier and more patient friendly that any other Iron treatment I have had.

I'm in stage 3 CKD. So, my doctor put me on Venofer - which helped but takes a long time to administer. So I read about a drug called Feraheme (sp?) and my doctor was first hesitant, but decided to give it a try. After ONLY 2 treatments (yes - only 2 doctor visits - instead of 8-10) I was able to get my iron levels up and I feel better and don't have to go to the docotor as often. Would highly recommend that you talk to your doctor about it.
