With surgery the alternative to fix enlarged prostate my Doctor offered Finasteride, 5 mg. I have been on it for 2.5 years and I have noted less frequent need for getting up at night to urinate. Overall--good. Also take Saw Palmetto (for over ten years) and trying to decide if I should drop it?

I've been taking 5mg finasteride for several years now in combination with 0.4mg tamsulosin and am very satisfied. At most I get up once during the night, but usually sleep through the night. I was looking to not ever have another roto-rooter surgery as I've had 2! My last one being in 2006. Have been very happy with these two drugs! Much better than the other option!!

Immediate relief from PBH.

I have not seen any difference in my urination symptoms. I still go 1-2 times a night.

Took for a year. Then stopped. Night time pee calls went from 5 to 2. Still 2 after stopping medication. Over time steady downhill on sex drive,and erections. Wish I had never taken this drug. 2 years later and still no sex drive or erections!1

I had such pain,(off and on) sometimes when I walked across the street I could hardly turn around and walk back across. After taking finasteride for 58 days all pain was gone. I do not get up at night. All is well, a god send.

I took this for BPH, because it was in the HMO formulary. It did not work and the worst side effect is it made my low Testosterone drop in half.

Stopped all hair loss. The individual hairs seem thinner and it brought out my natural curls. To anyone putting their depression or sexual issues on this drug and using it as a scapegoat, try exercising more. It only lowers DHT and not overall testosterone. Keeping in shape will keep the depression away and will help you maintain erections.

Was on this drug for five years, cut down on night bathroom run and shrank prostate, but lost sex drive,testicles very sore and penis skin would get so tight it turned blue and major shrinkage,loss of 2.75"!!

First off just to be clear isn't finasteride the generic for Proscor ? Many reviews I've read say they are taking it with Proscor. Also the sexual side effects are mostly caused by Flomax and Rapiflo for those using it in conjunction with those meds. As far as finasteride working for me, been taking it for 6 months and seems to help. Won't know if it is shrinking my prostate until I go back to Dr next month. I sure hope so. Don't want anything to do with that TURP surgery I've read so many horror stories about. PSA 1.8 and steady. Feeling better, but just deal with occasional Prostatitis flare ups once in a while. Started 5mg finasteride for BPH couple years ago. I was miserable...2-3 bathroom trips nightly, discomfort in testicles (like I'd been kicked) and worst of all, blood in ejaculate that turned it brown. The latter thoroughly disgusted my wife and me. Took a few months to kick in, but now bathroom trips are 1-2, discomfort and blood are gone. Hooray! Downside is same as others have mentioned.....genitals seem smaller, sex drive less, and almost no ejaculate. For me, it's worth it, hope this helps your decision.Read More Read Less

Been taking this Rx for about 2yrs with minimal results. Still up 3-4 times a night.Sex function near zero. Was bald and remain bald-no hair loss or growth. Taking 5 mg a day.

Everything is sexual problems no semen erection problems even with Tadafil Cialis 20mg been on it now for over 12 months and no other side effects.

Reduced my nightly trips to the John and significantly reduced my PSA. HOWEVER... extreme soreness in my breasts after 5 months. I stopped taking it for 2 weeks and my breasts are still sore. Grrr.

I am 50 years old and my doctor prescribed this to me to combat Male Pattern Baldness resulting from years of injecting Testosterone for building muscle and for fat loss. Although the hair on top of my head hasn't really grown much, I am so happy that my frequent trips to the bathroom at night have stopped, something I was completely unaware of that this drug accomplishes. Also, with the continuing Testosterone injections, my libido would be through the roof, having to masturbate 4 to 5 times a day in addition to constantly harassing my 40-year-old wife for more sex. Still urinating four times per night, adversely affecting sleep. Reduction of libido and semen. Increased breasts. not satisfied.

My VA Doc put me on an oral dosage of 5mg once per day (taken at night), as I've had BPH for over 25 yrs, and my PSA has always run on the high side. I'm 71, and due to having mumps at 12, it made me sterile (discovered when I was 23, producing no lil' swimmers, which led to a divorce. My sex-drive waned away in my mid-40's, and penile sex is now but a distant memory. I've adjusted to that, as well as my present Lady, who loves me for whom I am, not for what I was. SIDE EFFECTS: I've been on the pill for over 6 mo's now, and only two side effects I've noticed.. #1 - Ejaculation gone; and #2 - Swelling in my feet, especially when I'm sitting at my desk for over an hr, but the swelling goes away when I walk and when I'm active. GOOD POINTS: I rarely get up at night anymore, and can hold my urine when I'm driving. So all in all, except for my feet swelling, it's working for me. I have never had depression ever in my life and tgis pill turm me into a pathetic pike of hopelessness! DO NOT TAKE THIS DRUG!! Horrible horrible horrible!!! And like everyone says, pathetic erections and zero semen on top of it! FDA should bak this drug!!

I was at first very hesitant at trying this drug after reading the comments about the sexual side effects but I decided to take the drug I'm glad I did have been taking for about two months my trips to the bathroom at night went from five or more to two it does take a while to work and no side effects I have not noticed any sexual side effects from this drug so far I'm am 55 years old I had been taking flowmax it was great at first but stopped working for me I hope this helps
