I have been on Xarelto for one month. For the first 2 weeks I had no side effects but the longer I stay on it the more I have noticed that I am exhibiting symptoms I have never had. I am having muscle spasms around my eyes and eyelids. I have seen an opthalmologist and all is fine but they continue and are very annoying. I see that a side effect of this drug is muscle spasms. Also, I am itching a...

I was on Coumadin for 17 years until my INRs could not level out. Switched to Arixtra, giving myself subcutaneous shots in the stomach for a year. When Xarelto was made an option to me, I jumped all over it and began taking it in March 2012. May be total coincidence, but began having heavy menses in April until my hemoglobin was so low I had to have transfusion. Then I had chest pains and went to the ER, had a tropinin leak. No one seemed too concerned about the Xarelto but they did find I had a congenital heart defect. I'm scheduled for open heart surgery in one week. I'll stop taking the Xarelto 3 days prior to surgery. I guess we will see how Xarelto does once I am in recovery! I'm 45 years old, wish me luck!Read More Read Less

I was started on Xarelto once daily after having a problem using Pradaxa. I knew that I had gallstones but tried to delay surgery by staying on a no-fat diet. Eventually my doctors warned me that serious problems could arise if I needed emergency gallbladder surgery. After consultation with a critical care surgeon, he and my cardiologist worked together to wean me off Xarelto for 5 days prior to surgery. Two weeks ago today, I had a laparascopic cholecystectomy with no complications, no need for blood transfusions, no bleeding at the operative sites, and so far no hemorrhaging anywhere after surgery. I am greatly relieved, wounds have healed, and I think I am on my way to a great recovery. I did choose (with the consent of my cardiologist) to return to Coumadin (Jantoven) even though I do not particularly like the frequent testing. At 77 years of age, I feel that it is safer in case of a fall or accident or needed surgery. I did notice an increase in my arthritic and muscular pain while on both Pradaxa and Xarelto. Cost is also a factor to consider. I am not sure what the Jantoven will be per month once my dosage is leveled out, but I do know that using Pradaxa and Xarelto has put me in the "doughnut hole" with my Medicare drug plan for the last two months of 2012.Read More Read Less

Severe muscle pain in my legs after 5 months of use. Could barely walk and stairs were no longer an option. Had to stop this medication due to a routine procedure. In 5 days, all leg pain disappeared. In my opinion, this drug cannot be used for the long term. (A0fib)

I have been on Xarelto for about 2 weeks and now am experiencing a rash on one thigh and itching that is keeping me awake at night. No stomach issues. I so wanted this to work for me as I was so glad to stop taking warfarin but maybe I will have to go back on it.

In answer to the last post I have had no stomach issues with Xarelto. I was never on Pradaxa. My cardiologist quit using it because of stomach issues. I was on aspirin and had a lot of stomach problems on it. These have gone away since being on Xarelto...no heartburn.

My 87 year old mother began Xarelto in March for a-fib stroke prevention. After taking it for 3 1/2 months she complained of severe hip pain and could not walk. We thought she might have a spontaneous hip fracture related to osteoporosis with no outward signs of bruising. It turned out that she had a very large spontaneous hematoma in her hip muscle due to Xarelto use. This has caused a domino of other health problems related to the need to stop her blood pressure meds and beta blocker due to low vital signs. She needed a blood transfusion with Hemoglobin down to 7.5. She has been hospitalized now for 9 days and may go home in a few more. She has bruising now from buttocks to lower knee and pain and swelling in the entire leg. We almost lost her, but she seems to have just begun to improve. The convenience of Xarelto does not warrant the risk. Read More Read Less

I am having muscle spasms around my eyes and eyelids. I have seen an opthalmologist and all is fine but they continue and are very annoying. I see that a side effect of this drug is muscle spasms. Also, I am itching around my torso, back and scalp. I have never had this either. And, my joints hurt and I get spells when I feel very weak no matter how much sleep I get. I cannot get up enough energy to exercise as I have done in the past. I guess these are not life-threatening but they do impact quality of life. I am considering a switch to Coumadin. I will not take Pradaxa because of its tendency to cause GI upset as well as chest pain.Read More Read Less

Well I started it last December here it is May & side effects are occurring,I have severe itching & hives along with joint pain that won't stop.As I reported last time I'm taking it to stop strokes which are associated with Afib,I had ablation 6-2-11 of the atrial flutter,Dr.finally released me from Multaq.I'm still having heart palpitations but the afib has quietened somewhat.I now must go off Xarelto until I see my cardiologist on the 10th of May.
