SO FAR, SO GREAT! VENOFER IS WORKING EXCELLENT! I CAN'T TAKE ORAL IRON. I TAKE 2 INFUSIONS TWICE A WEEK AS MY RED BLOOD ARE EXTREMELY!!! LOW. I HAVE NO ENERGYWHAT SO EVER, HAVE A TERRIBLE TIME BREATHING, SITTING DOWN IS OK, BUT WHEN I STAND UP I FEEL LIKE SOMEONE HAS PUT A BAG OVER MY HEAD. I've had to receive Venofer IVs as a series of 3, as per my hematologist's prescription for iron deficiency which becomes anemia if left alone. First of all, anyone with iron deficiency shoudl know that they must insist that docs check ferritin levels, not just RBC/Hem, etc. Second, be prepared for your urine to look like cola. I don't know why this happens, no one has explained but it's standard ...

I've had 2 of 5 Venofer infusions at the hospital so far, for "severe" anemia. I've had no negative side effects. I'm hoping to feel improvement in my low energy soon. I don't know why I'm severely anemic, it may be because I've had a history of ulcers. My doctor has scheduled a colonoscopy; he says that he will get to the bottom of it. I do take a lot of NSAIDs for my osteoarthritis.

This drug helped my daughter for many years now she is beginning to have hives, and her legs swell, she is beginning to have reactions, they have changed her timing on her infusion to keep from giving more benedryl, but added another allergy drug. Who has had these reactions?

I have had 2 of 3 venofer admin and can honestly say I have not felt this good in a very long time. I felt sick after the first dose but was much better after the second. I have more energy and dont have chest pain like I did prior. I am very satisfied with this drug!

The nurse added this drug to my dialysate. I developed large blisters in my mouth. A severe rash developed around my buttonholes, has lasted for months. My Blood pressure hovers at 90/58. Has gone down as low as 80/58. Medication to raise it does not work. I had two fistulagrams less than 2 months apart. I needed a stint to keep my fistula open. I developed sores all over my abdomen. My skin became so thin it came off with the tape used to cover the dialysis needle openings. I developed pain and swelling in my abdomen. A CT Scan revealed a huge pocket of fluid had developed in my abdomen. The skin over the swelling peeled away and began draining. The fluid was tested, it is stomach fluid. 5 months later the wound is still draining despite surgery, wound-vac and daily wound care.Read More Read Less

Anemic. all tests showed no signs of internal bleeding. tested for just about everything. I take omeprazole for a different tissue. this drug inhibits iron absorption. therefore...I'm anemic. Just had my second Venofer 200mg. I have to say its like a miracle drug for me. no reactions...none. the positive..I used to fall asleep at the drop of a hat. had difficulty even driving my car at the end of my 12 hour shift. since treatment. energy is way up. Wife loves the old me being back. ooh la la....lol I just hope this does the trick....Read More Read Less

I have received venofur by push injection through an IV port twice and have four treatments left. Within two weeks of my first treatment I saw an improvement in symptoms. By week four I began getting back normal color. The medication does cause me to get severe migraine headaches and therefore I make sure that I don't schedule anything else on infusion days. It also has to be adminstered in a hospital setting which is why I only gave it three stars for ease. Like someone else posted my first urine after infusion is typically very dark, looks like iced tea. As opposed to listed side effects of constipation it causes me to have loose stool typically once a week the day after infusion but for me the gain is so high it does out weigh the side effects which is why I gave five star satisfaction. I am currently 32 weeks pregnant and have had no pregnancy related complications due to the medication itself, and once again the benefit of taking the medication for my baby out weighs the risks. I have iron defiency anemia, with poor red blood cell production. After one use my crit and hemoglobin levels had doubled from starting numbers which were extremely low and put me at high risk of heart attack, and stroke. Read More Read Less

I tried oral iron supplements (pills and liquid) for about 18 months, but my body just wasn't absorbing it and my ferritin was hovering at 4. All the GI tests came back negative, and the doctors finally discovered my taking lamotrigine was causing the poor absorption. I was able to stop that medication and focus on increasing my ferritin levels. In March 2014, I did a series of 4 Venofer treatments over 2 weeks and my ferritin increased to 80ish. After 3 months, the ferritin dropped back to 40, so my doctor ordered one more series of four infusions. That series seemed to do the trick. A year later - March 2015 - my ferritin has stayed above 150, and I feel so much better. I actually have energy. I can walk up a flight of stairs without running out of breath. I can wash my hair without needing a nap. The only drawbacks are having a lengthy appointment for the first infusion to see if there's an allergic reaction (2.5 hours), and the IV itself, which is never fun. I got a little rash from the bandages used to protect the injection site post-IV. However, that was local just on whichever arm the nurse used for the IV, so nothing to do with the venofer itself (I just have sensitive skin). I'll take a little localized rash that clears up in a week over horrible fatigue and malaise from the anemia -- or nausea and vomiting from oral iron treatments. Read More Read Less

I only took a test dose (25 mg) at my request. The side effects I got may be because iron competes with magnesium, mangenese, and zinc Docs only concern is with immediate allergic reaction (very rare), not with longer term effects. IV iron bypasses the bodies tightly controlled iron absorption. Here's what happened to me: Headache- started during, not too bothersome, gone that night Dizzy- started during, not too bad, a little dizzier than usual. Did not last long Chest- just had a coupe of twinges of pain during, transient, not a problem Smell- during infusion i asked if the iron smelled bad since i smelled something. Nurse did not smell it Taste- got a weird taste in mouth But then... About maybe an hour after it was done, started getting twitches in my legs in all different spots jumping from one to another. Never had that before. Its been long lasting. Now has also morphed into leg cramps 5 days later and still have twitching Very dry mouth and dry irritated tongue- could not get bread past my tongue. Started that night then gone next day Decreased apetite. A bad one. Lasted about 3.5 days Diarrhea- that same night- maybe from something else?? Both Ears felt congested-is this gone now? Ears hurting. No its not gone 7 days latr and still have it. Ringing in both ears- still have it. Ringing getting worse. Right ear worse. Inc. vertigo. I think this is from the iron and is a very bad symptom. Not surprising if iv iron is ototoxic and i did not look this up before agreeing. Taste (smell?) gone. I think its returned now after about 3 days. Update: still something wrong here. Last night when breathing deeply thru nose i smell something awful. (And an apple i previously like tastes unpleasant) Eyes started burning that night; gone next day. Toes are the last ting ive noticed . In first bath since hospital, when i touched joint/bone at base of each big toe had pain. Then saw let one was swollen. Never had problems with big toes before Read More Read Less

After my treatment I have a slight rash all over my body. I am itching like crazy and I have pain in my lower right abdomen area. I also am super tired and slept for hours after both treatments I have received. I am set up for six weeks of treatments and I am bummed because once I actually get in the room for the treatment it takes between one and a half hours to two hours for the iv.

Had Venofer (first infusion) at 11:00 AM, tolerated it fine. I actually felt great afterwards. By 4:30 PM, I started having uncontrollable chills and a severe headache. I spiked a temp of 101.6 F and was miserable. It lasted all night despite Tylenol 1 gram. Next day woke up with moderate headache and body aches.

My 18 yr old son was treated with Venofer after being diagnosed with iron deficient anemia following a routine blood test. We'd noticed that he'd been crunching ice like there was no tomorrow (which started off as a desire and over time became a compulsion/addiction) but he hadn't been voicing any of the other things that had been going on with him over the last 5 months .... incidents of blurred vision, feeling cold, & dizziness during physical exercise, or even when just standing from a seated position. His treatment began with 2 bags of blood, then 10 days later he was started on Venofer 200mg. Over the next 2 weeks he had 6 treatments. He complained that his arm was sore at the IV site, and that he was tired afterwards and would come home and sleep for a couple of hours. No other complaints or reactions. He made sure he drank plenty of water prior to treatment and was always told he had "good veins". Prior to treatment his Hemoglobin was at 6.3, now 14.4 and his ferritin 10, now 103. All of his # are in the normal range. It's been 1.5 months since his last IV and he's being monitored with his next blood work due in 2 months. He's taking Mega blood builder on a daily basis, and he doesn't have any problems with that. Oh, and the ice crunching mercifully stopped (completely) around about IV #4. He underwent a barrage of tests to find the cause for his anemia, but everything came back negative. I wanted to write a review of Venofer and let you know about his positive experience because I had initially been really worried about him receiving it after reading the negative reviews. Remember, everyone reacts differently. Just make sure your talk with your doctor and nurses at the facility and get the facts from them as to why this drug might be suitable for you. I get treated for my anemia every 6 months. Tried feraheme and had horrible hives and rash for weeks after tx. I have no discernable reactions to venefor(this is 2nd time using). After first tx I feel less dizzy and can sleep. I wish the benefits lasted longer, but I am happy.

I have only had one treatment , I was not expecting to be there for over four hours, the initial IV flow burned going in but it was determined the vein used may have been too small. I had no side effects until going home, became nauseated in the car ride home, after getting home I had hives on my arms but they subsided, within an hour I had chills out of this world, even with a heating blanket and comforter on I was freezing.I became dizzy and had a slight headache. The next morning I felt much better but then the diarhea started. Today is the 2nd morning after the IV treatment and so far no side effects. I hope this works for me. I am scheduled for my next injection on next Friday and praying the side effects don't return because it scared my family.Read More Read Less

I am currently receiving a series of five infusions. This is the third time I have had to receive these infusions. Venofer has worked in that it has raised my blood iron levels and the results have lasted a long time. It has been well over a year since the last time I had to receive it. That said, it is difficult for me not only because I have poor veins and every week they must establish a new IV line but I have side effects for about 24 hours following each infusion. I get horrible joint and muscle pains and this time I am experiencing persistent nausea. I am disabled now so it doesn't matter when I get them but in the past I used to receive the infusion at the end of my work day on a Friday so that I wouldn't feel well on Saturday and it wouldn't affect my work. I am told that most people don't have such severe side effects but that having some joint pain is common.Read More Read Less

I had gastric bypas 11 years ago. After years of feeling hungover every morning, I finally found out that my ferritin level was a 2. My hemotologist first rx'd weekly Infed. It was helping, but my ferritin was only 13. One time I had an itchy reaction during my infusion. The next time, my doctor rx'd venofer. Only a few months later, my ferritin is 180 and my iron was 14. I do have nausea/vomiting/diarrhea for 2-3 days after an infusion, but it is NOTHING compared to my "quality of life" before. Everyone reacts differently to medication. You just have to find what works for YOU. Don't go by what everyone else went through, but take those into consideration that side effects are POSSIBLE. Everyone is different. Good Luck!!Read More Read Less

I am now 65 years old, female and have taken Venofer for many years. I used to take 8 infusions, a week a part, and the infusions would last for 6 to 9 months and then I would have to start over. Then it was decided to give me maintenance iron infusions, one, every month and with monitoring, sometimes, I could go 2 months. I am infused with Benadryl to start and my infusion is 15 minutes. Sometimes on the day of my infusion I get diahrrea, for a time or two, but I otherwise feel fine. The iron kicks in a a day or two and I feel really energetic. It has really helped my quality of life. I can tell when I am anemic because of paleness (especially pale eyelids) and around my eyes, really fatigued, and extreme coldness. When I take Venofer and my iron levels increase my symptoms go away. I can not take iron pills because of stomach problems and Venofer bypasses the diagestive track I am told. It works for me.
