I got my first Depo Shot six weeks after my son was born. That was 14 years ago. I love not having to try to remember to take a pill and not having a priod. I go every three months and get my injection, I have even bought my own and had my husband do it at home. Absolutely no problems. I gained a little weight, but I am losing it slowly (5 lbs a year) I had a bone density test and I have the bone ...

DO NOT GET THE SHOT!!! I got it a week ago and not even 7 hrs later I began experiencing stiffness and pain in the joints of my hands and arms. About 1:30 in the morning I woke my husband up crying because I litterally could not move! The weight of the sheets on my upper body was causing extreme pain! I couldn't lift my head off the pillow or roll over on to my side. It took us close to 20 minutes...

I also was interested in this form of birth control to treat endometriosis symptoms. The first 6 months were not fun. I felt very nauseous, irritable, bled the entire time, and was just an angry crying sick mess. But I personally do not have other options for birth control due to other health issues. So I kept going and I am glad I did. Eventually the bleeding stopped and after taking different vitamins and using essential oils I had my nausea under control. I don't have a period anymore and my pains from the endometriosis have calmed down greatly. This is not the best experience to go through but being on any hormones is a difficult choice. I don't have to worry about a pill and I don't have to worry about pregnancy for now. Overall it took me about a year for my body to get used to and also for me to learn how to manage the side effects. Read More Read Less

the depo shot is HORRIBLE. I got it six months ago and have not stopped bleeding since. It made my already bad cramps worse and caused me to gain weight that I have not been able to lose. It made my anxiety and depression worse and gave me requent headaches. I was pressured into getting it by my old gynecologist who told me there were no reported negative side effects, which couldn't have been farther from the truth. DO NOT get this shot, getting it was the worst decision I have ever made.

When considering birth control, I was hesitant because I did not want to be the unlucky 1% who gets pregnant. I did not know about depo provera shot until after I had done my research on birth control. It sounded to be the most effective, least stressful birth control and I didn't have to constantly worry to take the meditation at a particular time every day. I looked online for the pros and cons of this injection and I was for the most part satisfied. I was worried that I might get an increase in acne, body weight increase (but these were not the case). I had to get the shot after my period was done and the injection itself did not hurt at all. I am not bias, as I am deeply afraid of needles. It was honestly a pinch. I have had the depo provera shot for three months and I have been doing raw sex ever since, and I have not gotten pregnant. The biggest con and the reason why I am not getting this shot again is that I constantly had vaginal bleeding/spotting. I had to constantly wear a liner, and my partner was unable to perform oral sex due to the blood. I was self conscious of potentially meeting someone and them wanting to feel me up, and I would stop any chance of that happening because I did not want them to feel my liner. Also, I had heavy vaginal bleeding the day after I had sex. The pro of this injection would be that it is very effective IF you get the shot at the given time you're supposed to, which is very three months. You do not have to be in constant fear that you might get pregnant. Read More Read Less

With all the negative reviews out there, I was terrified to try Depo, but reluctantly I got that first shot. Wow! I am in love! I only had my period for 2 days and that was it! No bloating, no cramping, no migraines, even the unwanted hair is thinning out. I have not gained a pound! Been on it for almost theee months now, going for the next one soon.

Since being on this (About 6-7 months now) I have continually bled every single day without fail. It was the worst decision I have ever made. I have had abdominal pain, bleeding, depression, mood swings, bloating every single day. I would not recommend anyone to go on this

If you already suffer from anxiety, DO NOT TAKE THIS SHOT. I read the warnings and tried it anyway and I am 100% regretting it now. After my first shot, I felt moody and depressed, but I thought these were effects of the abortion I had a few weeks prior. Somehow, the mood swings continued. My anxiety worsened. I was having panic attacks every other night during the last week of the 3rd month. My body was exhausted. For some reason, I still didn't equate the stress to the shot. I took the shot again when it was scheduled to be given to me, and all hell broke loose. The fear and anxiety and sadness I felt during the first week of my first round were tenfold. All other strange side effects aside, this drug made me DEPRESSED, SUICIDAL, and EXTREMELY ANXIOUS. I will NOT be taking this again and look forward to it leaving my system. Read More Read Less

I have been on the shot since I was 16, I was a multi sport athlete with cycles so bad I was unable to get out of bed due to my cramping and bleeding so severe. Since being on the shot, I have no bleeding besides occasional spotting during high periods of stress, I have experienced no weight gain and I have very little to zero cramping or mood swings. I notice for a couple days after the injection that I am emotional, which should be expected when a hormone is injected into your body. I have also never had a pregnancy scare or been pregnant. Overall I am very satisfied with this drug. Read More Read Less

I know a few people with awful experiences with the depo shot (excessive bleeding, hair loss, etc.) but I have been on the shot for 2.5 years and have never had a problem with it! I beleieve I have lost weight having been on it and haven't had a period since, except occasional dark discharge. I would recommend it!

I am due for my third shot in August. I am not sure I will continue it. My first shot caused heavy bleeding for ten days, a period a month and a half later and spotting during my regular periods, this was really bad because I'm anemic. it caused me to eat like a pregnant women for two weeks after my shot as well. Ever since my second a hot, which I received at the last minute I haven't been sleeping at all, then I sleep for two days straight. I'm always tired. since the shot, I have also been experiencing dark brown and very thick discharge, and it smells terrible. I feel ashamed to have sex with that coming out of me. It has been happening since late June, it is late July. Although I am not pregnant as far as I am aware, I wish planned parenthood would have done a pregnancy test and I will insist on a pap smear during my next visit even though its scheduled for another year. I hope that everyone else who has had problems recovers. My friend never will, she miscarried due to the drug tearing apart her uterine lining until it was too weak to support a child.Read More Read Less

Overall I had a good experience with the shot. I was on it for 9 months (3 injections) and stopped for personal reasons not having to do with the drug. It was very easy to use and I didn't lose any weight. In fact, I actually lost about 5-10 lbs while on it but I don't think the drug caused it. I was dieting at the time. I also was emotionally fine. The only negative side effect was that I would spot randomly throughout the time I was on it and even now the end of my periods are spotting for 3 days (it wasn't like that before I used the drug 5 years ago). Overall I would recommend but it seems really strong so I don't kno if it would be wise to use it long term (more than a few years at a time). Read More Read Less

I have been on depo provera for almost 6 years. This is one of the few birth control drugs I am able to take since it doesn't have any estrogen in it. For the first year I had my period almost every day, I continued to stay on it in hopes that it would get better and because my previous birth control drug was way worse. After over a year my bleeding finally stopped and I haven't had any spotting or my period since. The only other downside would be that I have some acne due to the drug, which, as long as I stuck to my regular skin care routine isn't a problem for me anymore. I also don't have any more cramps or other side effects. Read More Read Less

Don't take this!!!! And if you have already, use organic, blackstrap molasses to get your spotting to stop!!! I tried two rounds of the Depo shot for birth control. I immediately started spotting and didn't stop for 8 months. By that time it was finally leaving my system, and I then experienced five periods in two months. It also heavily affected my mood. I was crazy emotional the whole time and heavily struggled with depression, which is not normal for me. It took a year for my body to get back to normal, during said time my sex life was also heavily affected because of all the bleeding and cramping. I read a user review that suggested taking a tablespoon of organic, blackstrap molasses everyday and IT TOTALLY WORKED! That's when my spotting slowed down and my body started getting back to normal. Use this to get back to your old self!!!!!Read More Read Less

This concept of birth control is effective for its purpose, however the side effects on and emotional level are not. In the first 3 mths I had bleeding, headaches and suffered mood swings that affected everyone in my household. Ive been on it for 3 and a half yrs, and for all 3 of those yrs. my relationship with my husband suffered. I had many events happen to me while on this medication and my reactions to all my situations suffered from irrational anger, nit picking arguments that which could have been avoided, crying, etc. I lost the one true love of my life over this. I am so completely devastated because I put my family through so much that now its almost if not completely irriversable. My obgyn did not inform me that I should not have been on it for more than 2 yrs. On my third yr, I completely lost my mind and became a very angry person all of the time. I had no idea of the severity of the emotional roller coaster I was about to endure. I plan on getting off of it and now have to go get counseling and hope that my husband will see that I wasn't being myself for the last 3 yrs. He suffered so much that he ended up leaving me and my kids. I do not recommend this if you have serious issues going on in your life, like death of loved ones or other life altering events. It will ruin your life.Read More Read Less

TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE! Gained a ton of weight after getting two shots. Became extremely depressed and anxious. To the point where I felt suicidal! My interpersonal relationships suffered and some actually crumbled. I even left town because I couldn't deal with my emotions. Psychiatrist put it together that the mood issues corresponded with the Depo shots, and he didn't hesitate to blame it on that. WHY DIDN'T I THINK OF THAT?! It makes sense now. It's been 8 months since my last shot and I finally got my period, meaning it's out of my system. Mood has improved a lot, but not before depression wreaked havoc on my life. This is a scary, scary drug and NOT WORTH THE RISK! I feel so angry and helpless that this drug is administered so flippantly when I have been reading that my reaction isn't rare - many others also have experienced these horrible effects. If you have a negative reaction it stays in your system for a long time so you're stuck. HIGHLY ADVISE AGAINST IT. Read More Read Less

I would NOT recommend this. I took it and stopped having periods completely even after I quit taking it. I was taking it at 15 and I am now 18 and I haven't had a period since I quit taking at 15.

I was on this for almost 10 years before switching to the implant. I have endometriosis and got severe side effects with the depotlupron injection, so this was the superior option. However, I had significant weight gain over that time, and subsequent high blood pressure (more likely due to weight than the drug), plus a reduced sex drive. I never had break through periods or spotting, so that's a plus. I blamed the weight gain on me being lazy, but went back to the shot after having the implant...almost immediately after getting the injection, I was miserably hungry. If I had stronger will power and didn't mind feeling constantly starved, then maybe I could've stuck with it. Read More Read Less
