I have had A-fib for over 30 years on an irregular basis. I averaged one episode a year until June of 2006. That is when I started having A-fib 3 times a week on average. My Cardiologist has tried many drugs to control it. Finally in September he put me on Flecainide 50mg twice a day and I haven't had a sustainable episode since. I can feel my heart wanting to start A-fib, but it goes back into no...

I started taking this about 4 years ago for occasional flutter and a-fib. No symptoms since taking the drug so I consider it very effective. I recently went off the drug at the doctor's suggestion to see if symptoms return as this drug can have serious side effects.

A-fib and pvc's since 1980, on flecainide for 3 months, it is wonderful. Bystolic and Lisinipril rounds out the picture for minimal pvc's and normal bp. 67 years old.

I had a very difficult time increasing up to 200mg per day. I never really reached that amount but did use 50mg at night or to reduce increased heart rate periodically. I did keep this on hand so that I could get back to NSR without cardio version, but have found 3000 mg of Hawthorne root to work about the same, just takes a bit longer. I now take 1500 mg Hawthorne and 500 mg magnesium along with 120mg ubinquinol per day. Flecainide is a sodium blocker which your muscles release sodium to function. Your heart being a muscle will eventually be negatively impacted by this drug. Find an alternative or go for an ablation. Drugs are not the long term answerRead More Read Less

I often had atrial fibrillations with tachycardia, which lasted some 20 minutes each time. After taking Flecainide,as prescribed by cardiologist, normal heart rate resumed within an hour. I now take it twice a day. I felt some weakness for some three weeks only and then resumed normal life. I have MS for 20 years and I suspected that could have been the cause of heat problems but neurologist cannot prove it. I am doing fine now, just coping with MS.

The medication is effective; side effect I notice most is usually 2 hours after taking the drug: fatigue, needing to rest (kind of feels like someone slammed on the brakes). After that brief feeling (about 20 minutes) the rest of the day I feel great; no near fainting episodes any more.

Has been working well, since in the last year have had no A-Fib episodes or black-out spells. Do notice if I miss a dose the past few months, I get a bad migraine headache. Am starting to reduce dosage from 100 2x day to 50 2x, to see if I'm ok with that. Because for the last year I have also been on Thyroid meds for Hypothyroidism, so they seem to be helping my heart condition too.

I found the drug effective in treating my condition but the side effects were not acceptable. Ie.heavy legs , tiredness lethargy and lastly urge incontinence, which was not good and although I suspected that this was due to flecainide, it was confirmed when I stopped taking it and the urge incontinence disappeared too.

I took flecainide (with atenolol to reduce risk of torsade de pointes) for a year and it completely stopped my paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, and had the added unexpected benefit of stopping a problem I had with occasional muscle cramping. But the atenolol dropped my normally low heart rate and blood pressure to an untolerably low level (about 40 for the heart rate), so I stopped taking the combination.

The drug did not completely stop my problem. I still have missed beats several times a week. But it is a big improvement over what it was. The drug "flecainide 100 mg two times a day" causes constipation, dizziness, and weight gain. .

I am still being evaluated by my doctor on this medication. I am not sure the side effects are caused by this medication or some other medication that I am on.
