Antabuse, combined with other treatment modalities is an awesome way to get the Alcoholic on the way to sobriety. However, care must be used in those suffering from hepatocellular dysfunction or other liver problems. Unlike other expensive drugs this deterrant can help the alcoholic build a foundation to recovery.

Ok, I JUST started it yesterday. Have taken only two tablets so far. How long does it take to kick in?? I wanted to find out how sick it can make you, so I tried some cologne...waited 90 min, nothing. Did a shot of tequila...then another...and just did my third. Have NO signs (headache, nausea, etc). what's up with this???

I've tried everything to stop drinking. Fortunate to be on antabuse and sober for 26 days. I've had some side effects, but nothing to stop me from taking it. I will continue to use it and work with my 12 step program. Finally feel that I can live my life again. Very grateful. Don't use this medication if your going to drink.

My boyfriend was put on this drug after getting a DUI a few years back--with a BAC of .08, he had JUST met the legal limit, and as a consequence of probation was put on Antabuse. He is not an alcoholic (never was), and now says that he'll never drink again, even once done with Antabuse, as the prospect of having to be put on this drug again scares him too much. He's constantly tired, gets confusion coupled with forgetfulness, gets headaches almost every day, has stomach problems, and his libido has been all but destroyed. This drug having the word 'abuse' in the name should say enough. Read More Read Less

I take antabuse once a week, since the chemical lasts for more than 4 days, I am protected for most of the time, the one problem is psychological, you have to take the pill so you have to feel like not drinking, it has worked for me for two years and I am habituated to not drinking and feel kind of tense at the thought of getting drunk. I even have nightmares where I have consumed alcohol and feel panicked about it, so go ahead and use the drug if you need reinforcement for your willpower, but it is easy to fake taking it or subvert the process another way, especially if you are only monitoring yourself. By the way, the one or two times I did experience the symptoms of consuming alcohol with some disulfiram in my system were pretty uncomfortable, to say the least, it definitely works as advertised. I started taking Antabuse Nov 28th 2012, and havnt had the urge to drink since, it is GREAT, the only thing I dont like is I cant have pickles, catsup or mustard anymore, (I found out the hard way, was out shopping got a couple burgers without thinking and within 15 minutes I was in so much pain and felt nauseous, had the sweats, bad feeling, I can only imagine what it would be like if I had alcohol!

40 years of drinking, 4 detoxs and a rehab. Thought I could succeed with controlled drinking but the shrink thought otherwise. 3 weeks in and have no desire to drink - maybe the scare factor has driven the monkey away. Because I can't drink there is no mental turmoil to deal with. No side effects, no guilt trip. So far so good. Recommended.

I started on Antabuse at the end of July this year and it has been really effective. I find that I have no cravings whatsoever. When I have stopped drinking before I always get vague cravings but I don't know what I am craving for. Now I don't have any cravings at all and I don't need Campral or anything else. Must be psychological or something but I don't care - it works! 4 months and going strong...

I take antabuse once a week, i dont feel the need to take it everyday because it stays in your system for 14 days so every tuesday i take a maintenance dose. It works wonder, i also take it in the evening because it makes me drowsy (only side effect). I tried everything to quit drinking and nothing seemed to work (well my brain didnt work). But now i know i cannot take a drink for atleast 2 weeks everytime i swallow a pill and that keeps me charging in my recovery and my personal relationship with god and my family. Go to AA, but also include some biblical 12 step programs into you recovery, stay in your 12and12, living sober, big book, daily reflections and your Bible and i even read a book called Beyond the Influence: Understanding and Defeating Alcoholism, it is very powerful and explains alot more of how i became an alcoholic and why i was the way i was when i was drinking, i was born with the genetics to become an alcoholic, as are almost 90% of alcoholics. Faith was difficult for me but it gets stronger eveyday and that helps me make it One Day At A Time. Good luck and God Bless.Read More Read Less

My daughter takes 500 mg a day and drinks on it. She can have 2 beers and 2 shots while on it and not get sick but she gets very drunk, if she drinks more she gets sick and has bad hangover. I just picked up another script for her but now I am rethinking her taking it since she drinks, while not extreme drinking which is what she did before, she is playing Russian roulette.

The times I've been stressed and wanted to drink really bad, I don't or won't because I'm afraid of what will happen. So for me, this unknown fear keeps me from drinking. Also, I am taking Antabuse voluntarily; not court ordered. I have a friend I work with who is sober 15+ years who makes me take my pill and stay with her for 1/2 hour. All that probably isn't necessary for everyone but I appreciate her care and encourage- ment. I also go to Calvary Chapel on friday nights from 7pm-9pm. "The Most Excellent Way" is a 1 step program. JESUS! AA meetings just made me feel uncomfortable but I believe in the 12 steps. You can call people that go to the meetings for support and get prayer. Check it out even if you go to AA.Read More Read Less

Antabuse has helped me break a cycle of drinking but after almost 3 weeks of taking it the side-effects have become too much for me. No matter how much sleep I get I'm still tired and drowsy during the day and yesterday I got bad stomach cramps after taking it. It served a purpose for me but there is no way I would use it on a long-term basis.

Been effective as a preventative. I do feel sorry for people that do not have this choice.

This drug is awesome...if you take it everyday. I have been unable to stay sober for more than a month at a time over the last 5 years. When I drink I smoke crack. When I use I am sometimes gone for days getting high and staying drunk. My girlfriend of 5 years has put up with my constant relapses and somehow has stayed with me, always hoping I would stop. I tried absolutely everything to stop drinking and Nothing had stopped me. When I had the cravings I could not stop myself. So now it has been 3 weeks and I have stayed sober taking it everyday. My girlfriend gives it to me every morning because if it were up to me I would probably not take it so that I could drink occassionally. So if you have the option of someone literally putting it on your tongue and watch you swallow then do so. You can fight the disease out of fear of getting violently ill as so many other reviewers can attest to. Save your life...live your life. God bless us all.Read More Read Less
