This medicine works beautifully- no more dry mouth or eyes; however, the sweating episode that starts about 1/2 hour after taking each (of 4 pills a day), is an awful side effect. If I could just reduce the sweating, this would be the 'perfect' medicine!

Dr. suggested I try this for dry mouth but I was undecided. When eye dr. also suggested it for dry eyes I thought I'd give it a try. After a week of taking it twice a day I could tell a difference with mouth dryness. Minimal improvement with dry eyes. I still wake up during the night though with my mouth dry and have to get up for a drink. It does cause chills and sweating about 20 to 30 minu...

Pilocarpine did not help me at all. There was a slight increase in my saliva production but I still had to sip water with each bite of solid food in order to swallow. I had used Evoxac for years and had great results. When Pilocarpine came on the market my insurance would not cover the Evoxac unless I got preapproval, ie...almost an act of congress...A written request to the insurance company from my Rheumatologist, test results, etc...I was unable to get all this together at the time so I had to use the "generic" Pilocarpine for one month. There was an immediate difference. I virtually had to go to a liquid diet for nutrition. It took several weeks to get an appointment, have the Dr. contact the insurance company, etc..The Evoxac was quite expensive which was a shock, so I tried the Pilocarpine. The day I was able to start back on the Evoxac, the result was immediate...! I could swallow solid food again...gained back the weight I lost and could sleep through the night because I was not woken up by choking at night from my mouth being so dry.Read More Read Less

Not sure if it is a coincidence or not, but when I first took this prescription, I noticed an improvement pretty quickly. Shortly after I started, I started to feel very strange in my throat. I stopped taking it because I found myself making strange movements in my face and neck. I started aspirating on my saliva and drinks and even some foods. I felt like I had a dry spot in my throat and I had to keep coughing and drinking to correct the problem. I feel swelling in my neck around my saliva glands. I have not taken the prescription for about a month and I'm still feeling the effects of the drug. Seeing my doctor tomorrow. Read More Read Less

I seen a change in my dry mouth/dry eyes. I often forget to take it before meals so take it right after. I was quite surprised at how much I sweat. I go through periods of random sweat episodes all night and day. No other side effects have happened. Over all I am happy it is helping with my dry mouth and eyes.

Salagen works OK, that is, it helps me most of the time. The problem is they need to make an extended release version. I find that after about 3 hours my mouth is getting dry again. The way I use it is to take 5mg every three hours which ends up being 5x day. Obviously a pain in the neck. It also seriously increases the urge to urinate frequently which is another inconvenience.

I'm currently taking 1-5mg tablet 3x daily. It's almost immediately effective and has improved my life immeasureably. The SS makes swallowing and speaking nearly impossible. The only negatives are the times between doses as they've worn off and the "drying times" return. It's my plan to seek either more frequent dosing or some other change so the dryness relieving effects are extended. I can't imagine functioning without pilocarpine but the generic is costly though less so than the name brand, of course.Read More Read Less

If I take the dosage Dr. gave me 5mg 4 x day, I'm soaked with sweat and feel like I could choke on my own saliva. It actually run out my mouth. Broke tablets in half and only take 2 x day. I stopped and would wake up with my tongue and mouth so dry I thought I would choke, had to take tiny sips of ware to make mough wet.

I've been taking this for 3 mo. It worked for my dry eyes immediately, my mouth after a couple of weeks. So far, I've had to have a chest x-ray and CT. I can't get over the chest congestion that has developed. It's constant and the drs. think I've had pneumonia. I skipped the drug the last 2 days and already can breath better. I've wakened in the night feeling as though I'm choking. It's worked but, I am going to quit taking it. I need my lungs and from what I understand from reading pulmonary edema is not uncommon. I don't know what I'll do now. Good luck. Read More Read Less

I only started taking this drug four days ago, all I can say is WOW! For years I've had Sjorgren's and had the driest mouth, so dry I had trouble talking, swallowing. With the first dose my mouth watered so much, I panicked a little, not knowing what was going on. I'd been told it would take several days or even weeks to notice a change. For the first time in years I could whistle! I believe that it has even improved my dry eye symptoms. The dose I'm taking is low and so far I'm at a once daily dose, I'm wondering what will happen when I have to increase the dose! Read More Read Less

This drug took about 2 months to start working, then it worked great for the next 6 months. That is when it turned on me with heavy sweating then the cold chills, the shakes, blurred vision. I discontinued usage when the constant tearing of the eyes started which I still have problems with upon waking even though the doc tors say it's half life is only four hours. I also found without insurance it to cost prohibitive, along with remembering to take it 4 times daily.

until lately i have been very pleased, until i could not buy Generic form name PILOCATPINE. The name brand SALAGEN cost $80.00 at WalMart. I have tryed to find Generic form at Publix, and a number of different stores no luck. I heard the company that makes SALAGEN bought the rights to company that made GENERIC brand.

I was on this med 2 months before it started working. When it is working it produces so much saliva i have to continualy swallow, when in bed it makes me choke on the saliva it creates and the small amount of thick saliva already there.I get the sweats shortly after taking the pill.I also get the chills occasionaly and a very runny nose. Im going to talk to my doc. about stopping its use.

In taking the 5mg, I was using 4-5 times a day for relief and it was fine. It was remembering to take it often during the day. Doctor upped my dose to 7.5mg 3 times a day and the side effects are much worse. I'm asking for the lower dosage but take it more often.

Salagen affects your sweat glands and is more trouble than it is worth! Sweat wasliterally dripping off of me. I would not recommend this to anyone.
